I think this is the critical error...

Let's see if this has any effect...

reboot to the Repair Environment - as soon as the machine restarts, start tapping F8 - this should bring up the Advanced Boot Menu, at the top of which should be the option 'Repair my Computer'
Pick that.
You'll have to log in with your username and password.

Pick the option to use a Command Prompt

dism.exe /image:C:\ /cleanup-image /revertpendingactions

This is supposed to revert all pended updates, however if System Restore is not working, then there may be other issues as well

sorry again for not coming back to this thread in a while - real life calling again.

is there any way i can perhaps repair or replace wmpshare.exe? i googled around for a bit and found out that wmpshare.exe lacking any permissions whatsoever might be due to the work of a virus. what virus, i wouldn't exactly know - i'm rather paranoid about the safety of my computer, and i haven't gotten a single positive on my antivirus for about a year now.

just a heads up, i might not be able to reply back for a while. have to study my way into grad school.

Let's have a look at the existing permissions on the various versions of wmpshare.exe on your machine...

Open an Elevated Command Prompt, and run the following commands...

ICACLS C:\windows\winsxs\wmpshare.exe /T >>"%userprofile%\desktop\wmpnoel.txt
ICACLS "C:\Program Files\wmpshare.exe" /T >>"%userprofile%\desktop\wmpnoel.txt
ICACLS "C:\Program Files (x86)\wmpshare.exe" /T >>"%userprofile%\desktop\wmpnoel.txt

They will take a couple of minutes to run - and put a file 'wmpnoel.txt.' on your desktop - zip that and upload it.

Interesting.
There are a couple of odd permissions there, but nothing that would prevent it working.
However, the copy of the file in the Program Files (x86) folder appears to be missing
I'm not certain why this hasn't been addressed by SFC, but it may be a missing hardlink that's the problem.
If that's the case, then it may be the tip of an iceberg

Back later..
