Windows 7: Error code 80070005 trying to install KB3033890 (WMP patch)

hey, it's been a long time hasn't it? have you found out anything regarding the weird permissions we found last time?

sorry for bugging you again with this, but i'm getting the 80070005 on KB3138962 this time. wmpshare.exe (which this update apparently interacts with) still has deny permissions across the board, so i'm pretty sure that's still the problem... but first thing's first, my most recent CBS and windowsupdate.log are attached. if i missed any steps (and i probably have - it's been almost half a year now), please let me know.

also, i don't know if this is related, but that update and the ones that released at or near the same date seem to take an inordinately long amount of time to check for and install, making it very tedious trying to install this particular batch of updates one at a time (so that the 80070005 error doesn't revert the ones that should've installed).

Hi Freecom,
Noels had an eyesight problem hence the lack of a reply.
Im not in his league, but ill give it a bash.

Have you ever duel booted/used a boot loader

for starters can you uninstall/reinstall WMP. Uncheck in features REBOOT - recheck REBOOT

Windows update log is showing a number of errors

Its stating that your browser is Out of Date, --- odd as your running IE11, any probs?
wouldn't hurt to reset the defaults
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/923737

Have you changed your hosts file?
WU appears to be trying to get its info from the wrong server
try this link http://go.microsoft.com/?linkid=9830262.

If that fails we might have to do it as follows
PRINT IT OUT
To remove static IP addresses for the Windows Update website

  1. Open Computer by clicking the Start button , and then clicking Computer.
  2. Double-click the local hard disk where Windows is installed, typically drive C.
  3. Double-click the Windows folder, and then double-click the System32 folder.
  4. Double-click the drivers folder, and then double-click the etc folder.
  5. In the etc folder, right-click hosts, click Open, and then, when you are prompted to choose a program to open the file, click Notepad.
  6. In the hosts file, check if the # sign appears next to each Windows Update IP address and host name entry. If not, add the # sign or delete the entire entry.
  7. Click the File menu, click Save, and then try to check for updates again.

0x8024000B Error
To resolve this problem, rename the Spupdsvc.exe file, and then try to install the updates again. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. Copy the following text, paste it into the Run box, and then click OK or press ENTER:Cmd /c ren %WinDir%\System32\Spupdsvc.exe Spupdsvc.old
please check that system restore (min5%) and VSS are running

and finally can you
Check the setupapi_dev.log, for any access denied errors.

I believe the group policy hack is the problem, although Noel removed it, its possible the changes it made are still on your system.

Roy

not sure if you're asking if i know how to dual boot (for future reference), or if i've ever done it on my machine, but to both of those questions, the answer is no.

i have no idea how to do this.

i would imagine so - if one update gets the 80070005 error, it just throws the same error for the rest of the updates i try to install at the same time. speaking of which, i was able to install the other updates just fine by excluding KB3138962.

i have no idea, i use Firefox like 95% of the time, with the other 5% being Chrome.

i'm pretty sure i haven't, mostly owing to the fact that i don't even know how to change the hosts file. but i vaguely remember hearing about how some types of malware can change the hosts file to point to servers hosting trojans. i'm pretty paranoid about security on my computer, but the hosts file being changed might've been something i got years ago, removed, and then forgot about.

i downloaded the troubleshooter you linked, and one of the entries after the scan says "Windows Update error 0x80070057(2016-03-16-T-02_44_18P) - Not Fixed". strangely, the detailed information says the problem actually was fixed by "resetting Windows Update data store". don't know which one to believe.

i attached some screenshots of the reports as i couldn't find a way to just get a simple log file of it.

i'm assuming this is what i'm supposed to do if the diagnostic above turns up anything bad?

i'm not getting this error, though. been getting 80070005, and it's because of all the permissions being denied on wmpshare.exe (if i remember correctly).

what is VSS, and how do i check that both of these are running?

alright, so i disabled IE, and i'm probably gonna leave it off until i need it for something because i don't use it anyway.

trying to disable Windows Media Player gets me "An error has occurred. Not all of the features were successfully changed." no surprise there. still got prompted to restart... which left the check boxes marked anyway.

Windows Backup is not enabled and it's on Manual. i might've turned it off myself a long time ago, i use a third party backup tool. should i turn it back on?

Volume Shadow Copy is the same.

went into System Protection and put the disk space usage to 5% (about 28 GB). to be honest, i only have 58 GB left on my hard drive so i'm a little wary about this one.

setupapi.dev.log is attached.

ended up replacing the hosts file myself as per the instructions on the Microsoft link. couldn't find the download button, but i literally woke up about 30 minutes ago so bear with me here

Hi Freecom,
For the time being please enable and start them. As a matter of interest what is your back-up.
The Setupapi log is fine.
the hosts download was that blue download box.

Have you renamed that 8024 error file?

Not been up that long myself.

Back in a while.

alright, started both services.

i currently use the free version of SyncBack. i had to look for something more robust than the default Windows backup software, because it just took way too long to back up everything. at least with SyncBack, it only overwrites stuff that's been modified since the last time i did a backup, so it only takes a few hours at worst, instead of like 3 days straight.

i put in the command in Run, and all i got was a message in a DOS window that just vanished in the blink of an eye, so i don't know what actually happened. i went to the System32 directory and i don't seem to have Spupdsvc.exe for whatever reason. is this something crucial to Windows Update? from the file name alone, it sounds like it is, although i'm still able to fetch and install updates.
