    Windows Update error 80073712

Windows updates have been failing for months now. Error code 80073712 is the most common error code and the one I got when I tried updating today. Sometimes there have been other error codes as well but yesterday I tried running every fixit type program I could find reference to in the Microsoft Windows 7 suite and perhaps they have helped a bit. sfs/scannow ran with no errors. I attach a CBS zip file although I created it just before running the dates again so I hope it is ok. I see this error had come up a lot in the past and has been solved with help but couldn't see recent posts on it.

Well it seems the CBS.zip file is not attached because when I try to attach it I get a message saying there is a security token missing and to contact the (forum I assume) administrator. I have done so and await a reply from him.

    Any help greatly appreciated.

Security token missing? That's a new one on me!
Try uploading the files to a fileshare site (OneDrive or DropBox preferably) - then post a link to them in your reply.

Hope this is what you want. Never used dropbox before and it does not seem to work exactly as the instructions say

It seems the 'security Token' error may have been due to a long upload time - which wouldn't be too surprising in view of the file's size (20MB)
There's no errors in the CBS.log file or CheckSUR. (there were errors in a few ancient runs of CheckSUR - have you done a repair install at some point?)
I see you're running Comodo Firewall as well as their AV? (I'm not a fan of either, but they don't often cause too many problems - and those tend not to be of this sort)

The errors I do see revolve around this sort of thing...

This looks as if it's either a permissions problem on a registry key, or corruption of the registry key.

Please open an Elevated Command Prompt, and run the following commands:

    Code:
    REG QUERY "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\SideBySide\Winners\amd64_microsoft-windows-w..lient-aux.resources_31bf3856ad364e35_en-us_cf02fcf53904b0b" /S

    .
    post the results.

    DUH?= expression of confusion! :)
In this case, probably alcohol-induced as what I was commenting on was actually fairly simply explained.
For some reason when posting the commands I posted into the Code box, one line got split into two.

    Let's try that again...

    Code:
    REG LOAD HKLM\COMPONENTS C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS
    REG QUERY "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\SideBySide\Winners\amd64_microsoft-windows-w..lient-aux.resources_31bf3856ad364e35_en-us_cf02fcf53904b0b" /S

    .
run those commands and post the results

I think I'll turn chicken at this point - and do things the hard way

I need to have alook at your COMPONENTS registry hive

Please copy theC:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS file (no extension) to your desktop andthen compress it - upload the compressed file to your favoured fileshare site(preferably Dropbox or OneDrive) and post a link.
