The 'hard drive check' is actually a CHKDSK /R - but I'd hold off on that until I can delve a little deeper into what I saw earlier (running CHKDSK on a potentially dodgy drive can cause it to fail catastrophically ).

Here's the reference I was trying to find...
0x8024200D and 0x800f081f error when you are installing Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 - Microsoft Reduce Customer Effort Center - Site Home - TechNet Blogs
Can you work your way through that on your own, or do you need assistance?

I am referring to hard drive check

C:\windows drive>properties>tools>check volume for errors

usually it will scan on reboot

Thanks for the link! Just to update you:

Opt1 I completed but I believe I already did this prior to posting. No joy
Opt2 I couldn't find the RAST update. Followed the link to install whcih it allowed me to do. Restarted and re-tried but still no joy
Opt3 Am having problems finding the offending package in the system event viewer order to remove. Will continue with this one.

You're very unlikely to have a problem with the RSAT tools - they are fairly specialist beasts, and you'd almost certainly know if you'd installed a Beta version.

Post the logs - I'll take a look...
Open Event Viewer
click on the Windows logs entry in the left pane to expand it.
Now click on the Application entry - wait while it loads.
Click on 'File' in the menu bar and select Save...
Save the file as Appevt.evtx
Repeat for the System log
then zip both, and upload them.
