    Can't install Windows 7 update 7.1

So for quite a long time now, I guess since the updates release, I have been unable to install windows update 7.1. It was annoying but not really necessary so after trying a bunch of different things and it still failing, I eventually just gave up. But now with windows 10 approaching I was looking to see about updating to windows 10, but it appears that I MAY have to update my windows 7 before I can update to windows 10.

So I went to try and give the 7.1 update another try and it still fails. Reading online it sounds like people with a similar issue had success after running a repair installation, but this presents another problem. This laptop came pre-installed with windows 7 and my product key sticker is worn to the point where it is kind of hard to read. In addition I do not have a windows 7 disc.

    Any advice?

    Welcome to the forum kylezachary.

I have no idea what a Windows 7 (7.1) update is.
    Could you give more detail?

    updates/activations

Please go to the Updates/Activations Subforum and follow the guildlines in the sticky.
I'm assumming you mean the SP1 update.

There are a number of programs you can use to find your product key, type showkey in the search box

So I downloaded a program that found my product key... but when I go to the windows software recovery website and enter in my key it comes up with an error 715-123130. Also from what I can make out from the sticker on my laptop, the key on the sticker looks different from the one that a program called belarc found.
