KB3033929 does not install, error 80070490

    Hi,

currently, KB3033929 does not install on my machine and fails with error 80070490.

Some days ago, I realized, that KB3004394 had numerous failed installation-attempts. So I started looking into the details.
First I tried SURT and tried solving the issue using the info from the log. Googling from there, I extracted KB3004394 to the servicing-directly as described in numerous sources. This did not really change the log.
So the next thing I tried was cleaning the windows-update-cache by following the instructions here: https://rahuldpatel.wordpress.com/20...pdate-failure/
Basically, this advised me to delete %windir%\SoftwareDistribution after stopping the service "wuauserv".

Well, after I did that, KB3004394 wasn't the problem anymore (it is not even offered as update anymore), but now installing KB3033929 fails.

Do you guys have any idea, what I can do to fix that?

I followed instructions to zip the CBS-folder. Even zipped, it is too large to attach. Please find it here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/t81y6vurmv9hy0a/CBS.zip?dl=0
Since the folder initially contained 3GB of log-files, I deleted everything in there before running SFC and SURT.

Thank you very much for any help!

You have some severe problems in the CheckSUR log...
    Code:
    Summary:
    Seconds executed: 1960
     Found 102 errors
CSI Manifest All Zeros Total count: 22
CBS MUM Corrupt Total count: 10
CBS Catalog Corrupt Total count: 10
CBS Watchlist Package Missing Total count: 53
CBS Watchlist Component Missing Total count: 7
The variety of errors makes me think that there is an underlying cause for them -

I'm unclear what you mean by this statement...
Googling from there, I extracted KB3004394 to the servicing-directly as described in numerous sources.
it could mean many things - some of which would cause more problems than they solve. Certainly, nothing you did appears to have affected the CheckSUR results, anyhow (probably because the download you got was a different version to the one in the report).

This sort of error-list is bordering on the sort where it would be better to do a repair install than attempt to fix the known errors, because of the possible underlying issues, so I need to know what's been done before making a decision about where to go next.

Sorry for being unclear and having a typo in there.
Basically, the hint I found, told me to download KB3004394 extract it to a directory of my choice and then copy several files to a location where SURT is supposed to find them and use them for the repair.
I cannot remember the exact location, but the location had "servicing" in it and was some temp-directory that is definitely not used by windows directly. IMO, there is no way, this action could have damaged anything.

What kind of underlying cause for this are you thinking about?

    I've uploaded a file - epsaa.zip - to my OneDrive at Noel's OneDrive

    Please download and save it.
Right-click on the downloaded file, and select Extract all…

Extract to the default location - which will create a new folder epsaa in the same place.
Open this folder - there should be two folders inside it (Manifests,a nd Packages)

Copy the content of the Packages folder to thefolder

    C:\Windows\Temp\CheckSur\Servicing\Packages

Andthe content of the manifests folder (.manifest files) into this folder:

    C:\Windows\Temp\CheckSur\Winsxs\Manifests

Now run the CheckSUR tool again (it may take a while)

Post the new CheckSUR.log file, and the CheckSUR.persist.log file.

Assuming that Cheksur tells us everything is OK, the first thing you need to do after that is UNINSTALL KB3004394 - possibly you may need to do it twice.
Then go to Windows Update, and do a Check for Updates - install the new version of KB3004394 that you'll find there, and reboot.

Then you can install the other updates.

I ran SURT (Windows6.1-KB947821-v34-x64.msu) again as you told me after copying the files to the locations specified. Unfortunately, CheckSUR.log did not tell me that everything is alright now:

    Summary:
    Seconds executed: 1862
    Found 92 errors
    Fixed 32 errors
CSI Manifest All Zeros Total count: 22
Fixed: CSI Manifest All Zeros. Total count: 22
CBS MUM Corrupt Total count: 10
Fixed: CBS MUM Corrupt. Total count: 10
CBS Watchlist Package Missing Total count: 53
CBS Watchlist Component Missing Total count: 7
Fixed: CBS Paired File. Total count: 10

Since there are still errors getting reported, I did not do anything else.

What would be the next step? Run it again to get a clean log?

    Please find the log-files attached.

That was the result I expected - it wasn't likely to get much better than that yet
    Code:

Windows Update may still work now - and it's worth trying as it may install affected updates which can cure the remaining errors.

Ok, I gave it a shot.
I could not uninstall KB3004394 first, because it is not installed on the machine. It is also not offered as update currently.
But I tried KB3033929 again: It failed again with error 80070490.

I also tried the remaining updates that were offered:
KB3065987, KB2952664 and KB3035583 went through just fine.
KB3040272 failed with error 80070490 as well.

I'll run SURT again and post the logs tomorrow.
