Windows 7: Gateway Activation

Gateway Activation

One of my best friends bought a Gateway Windows 7 Home Premium, 64 bit in 2012 and I helped him set it up, copied his documents, favorites, etc from the old XP.

When he turned it on the other day he got the dreaded 'no boot device' msg. When I went over I got the same msg, and heard a tapping sound coming from his Seagate 2TB HDD. I put it in an enclosure and hooked it to another PC. The drive was not recognized. I put another hard drive in the tower, and reinstalled Windows 7.

Now my friend is a very smart retired gentleman, but he has the occasional brain fart. Apparently the COA sticker on the side panel had started to become loose and he simply ripped it off and tossed it. Over a year ago....

So now I have W7HP installed and 3 days left to activate.

Any suggestions?

The installed Product Key is from a DELL computer - assuming that the COA sticker on this computer is for Windows 7 Home Premium, you need to change the Key to the one from the sticker, using the link at the bottom of the System properties page, and than activate that.

Thanks for the reply, but you missed the following paragraph from my original post:

So we have no COA sticker because he threw it away when it started to peel off. The installed product key is a Dell key because that's the disk I used to install the OS. I don't have a Gateway disk, and neither does my friend. I find it abhorrent that manufacturers stopped supplying those when you buy a computer. I guess they've corrected this in Windows 8, since the key is part of the BIOS, and I assume that my Dell disk would've activated. But that doesn't help my friend.

The only thing you can do is acquire a set of Recovery media from Acer - if they still do them.

Yeah, that's one plan, but an even better one might be acquiring a set from Gateway

Did not know that.... In fact I thought HP owned Gateway. At any rate, I called Gateway accessories and a recovery media disk will be here in 3 to 5 days. Thanks.
