Confusing Failed/Successful Status After Update

There's no errors in either CheckSUR.log or CBS.log files.
Going back to the latest CBSPersist file shows just a single error - involving KB2952664 - which in theory can be ignored.

The windowsupdate.log shows that the major problem appears to be the connection to the MS servers for downloading updates. This is likely to be the result of McAfee getting in the way.

I would suggest uninstalling McAfee (at least temporarily), and running their MCPR tool, then installing MSE until we have the solution to your problems.

Download the McAfee removal tool from:

Click Save, and save the file to a folder on your computer.
Navigate to the folder where you saved the file.
right-click on MCPR.exe and select 'Run as Administrator' to run the removal tool.

when complete, reboot.
After the reboot, open an Elevated Command Prompt, and run the following command

NETSH WINSOCK RESET

You'll be advised to reboot - do so.

Then try another Windows Update and see how that works.

I'm not comfortable with uninstalling McAfee, mostly because I don't have anyone to ask for help just in case I mess things up. Currently it's not something I want to attempt unless not doing it is likely to cause more serious problem later.

Having said that, something odd happened last night and this evening. Shortly after connecting to the Internet, the Windows Update icon suddenly appeared in the system tray saying it was downloading updates. This first happened last night at around 11pm which I thought was strange, as it usually checks for updates around 6pm. It hung at 2% for a couple of minutes, then disappeared.
I checked Windows Update's status and it said Windows was up to date, but it also said the last installed update was at 18:02 yesterday and was "failed", even though there's nothing new listed in History after the KB947821 I ran to get the logs a couple of days ago.

The same thing happened this evening - Windows Update icon suddenly appeared in the system tray saying it was "downloading", only this time it got to 57% before disappearing. Windows Update still thinks I'm up to date regardless. I have no idea what's triggered this as I've never encountered it before - it looks as though it started a day or so after installing KB947821.

EDIT: About five seconds after I posted this, the windows Update icon reappeared and is still "downloading", and is still at 57%.

EDIT #2: Whatever it is, it's finally finished downloading. I recently changed Update settings to "Download, but allow me to choose whether to Install" instead of automatic install, but I can't see any evidence of the download anywhere. Windows Update still says it's up to date when I check...

You have MAJOR problems

I can't load the hive to correct the obvious errors - and my limited skills don't cover this type of recovery.

I can only suggest that you post the same files to another forum - Sysnative Forums - and hope that someone there can assist.

Let's backtrack a little...
I can understand you being wary of uninstalling McAfee - but it is known to cause problems occasionally, and the best way to fix it is to uninstall it, run the cleanup tool, and then either reinstall McAfee or an alternative.

The problem with your updates - 80200010 errors - is that the computer is having problems connecting with the MS Update servers. This is more often than not a problem with firewalls - or hardware. Since everything else appears to be OK, it's more likely the firewall.
Without intense study of the rules created by you and McAfee, it's difficult to work out where exactly the problem may lie - and my skills in that respect are limited anyhow. Uninstalling McAfee and reinstalling it as above will effectively reset the firewall so that it can be retrained, and assuming the problem was there in the first place it will go away.

As to why you're suddenly picking up older updates, they may have been hidden, but a reset of WU unhid them - or an update changed the hardware detection to allow these updates to be found.

The remaining errors in SFC related to KB3068708 can be ignored.

The 80240020 error is a problem with connectivity to the MS servers - it's them throttling the upgrade process a bit.
