Checked services settngs tried to start windows update but gave me same error. I was able to access windows update but it took 3 to 4 minutes and when it did there was a X by the windows update header and it was RED. Could not view update history. Any help on this is appreciated

Please follow the Windows Update Posting Instructions and post the requested data

If the file is too large (8MB compressed), remove the older CBSPersist cab files until the final file is below the limit - you can always post them separately after zipping them. (the forum doesn't allow the upload of bare CAB files, for a number of reasons)

Please also post the C:\Windows\windowsudpate.log file

We need the CheckSUR date as well...
Please download and save the CheckSUR tool from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821
(you'll need to look in the details for Windows 7, downloading from the Microsoft Download Center)

Run it - The tool can take anywhere from 5 mins to a couple of hours to run (or 'Install') depending on how much it has to do, and may exit silently - it may appear to freeze for most of that time, but be patient.
The result is logged in the C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log file - and an archive …\checksur.persist.log file

Then zip the CheckSUR.log and upload it to your reply.

By AV I assume you mean Anti Virus it is Norton the only AV I use since I built this PC 5 yrs ago. I never had issues like this until 6 or 8 months ago.

    Aaah! the beloved Norton! -
I hate to tell you this, but the chances are that all your problems are due to Norton!
Having said that - why did you wait 6-8 months to attempt to repair a problem?
This is likely to make what should have been a simple problem something like an iceberg....

I need to see your C:\windows\windowsupdate.log file.
