I changed type to Registry Hive, renamed to mdvreg and exported to desktop. It won't upload - invalid file. I tried zipping, hope this OK

The error doesn't seem to have exported to the file - which is what I was afraid of.
I'll have to work out how to get (and replace) a copy of the full SOFTWARE hive of which this is a part....

OK. I greatly appreciate your help but if this is a nightmare I can leave it as it is and just stop it trying to constantly install this update.

Problem is that it will get worse over time - and will end up requiring a clean install to fix, I suspect.

Back later.

Thanks. Are there any tools I could try running at the weekend that could help identify the error?

Sorry about the delay - let's see if this tool finds anything...

Please download SFCFix from here... http://www.sysnative.com/niemiro/apps/SFCFix.exe and save it to your desktop (we'll need it later anyhow, I think)

Now download SFCFix.txt from here... Microsoft services - save that to your desktop as well.

Now close all windows, and drag the SFCFix.txt file and drop it onto the SFCFix.exe file
You should see a command prompt window open, and SFC fix try to update before it proceeds to look for Bitshifts.
Once complete a Notepad window will open - copy the content to your response.

I have rerun SFCFIX this morning. It has now been running almost 4 hours and hasn't completed or has stalled. Taskmaster is showing 13% CPU for it and 8220K memory but these figures are not changing.I had a quick look for another SFCFix.txt file on my system but the only one that exists is the one I downloaded from your link and only contains BitShift::
I'll try it again tomorrow.

I suspect that it's found something it can't handle and is stalling - There may be some data in the system somewhere...

There should be a folder
C:\SFCFix
please compress that and upload it to a reply.
