Agreed. Snake Oil products that scam people out of their money.

klear6,
Get your money back if it is not too late.

Here is what it found "wrong" with a fresh install of Windows:

The registry items that it found are not problems.

I think I figured out where this problem originated. My mom gave me her old laptop yesterday. I wiped it and reinstalled/upgraded windows and began my usual routine of removing the stuff that I don't like that the Compaq Presario came with. The first 2 things I always try to get rid of are Norton and McAffee because I can't stand them. For some reason I decided to download one update just to see if it would work or if I was truly cursed. It downloaded and installed just fine. I started with removing Norton Backup using the Norton Removal Tool. then I tried to download an update. Same error message as the Aspire. So I ran the recovery software on the Presario and did not use the Norton Removal Tool to uninstall backup and antivirus. Instead, I just uninstalled them through the control panel. Downloaded an update and it worked just fine and has been ever since then. I was hesitant to believe it would be the cause of such a frustrating error and go unnoticed for so long among all the people using that tool. I did a search on "norton removal tool and bits" and this is what I found:

BITS service problems-related to Norton Removal Tool? - Microsoft Community
BITS service problems-related to Norton Removal Tool? - Microsoft Community

Now I am convinced. So I know where it came from but nobody else had a solution posted. Is it too late to fix whatever has happened? Is the only way to approach this with a fresh install and remembering never to use that removal tool again? I really hope that there is some other way - I have put a ton of effort into getting this computer to run the way I want to - and it runs well except for the problem with the Bits/updates/printer.

Which fix am I going for here? When I look for Fix It 50202 all I can download is an automated troubleshooter.

Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
Locate the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\BackupRestore\FilesNotToBackup
If the registry subkey exists, go to step 4. If the registry subkey does not exist, create the registry subkey. To do this, follow these steps:
Right-click Backup Restore, point to New, and then click Key.
Type FilesNotToBackup, and then press ENTER.
Quit Registry Editor.
should work

OMG IT WORKED!!!! You, and whoever wrote what you quoted, are my heroes!!! It is downloading updates as we speak. I haven't tried the printer yet. I have been having this issue over and over again for so long with so many reinstalls of windows i was almost ready to give up. Can you explain to me how that worked or exactly what I did? I will add that information when I post this fix for all the others who are dealing with this crazy issue. Norton need to learn how to go away without busting up someone's operating system.

Great! - I have to admit that when that was posted I was dubious about it, because while I detest Norton, and consider it to be little better than Malware itself, I always thought the Removal Tool did a decent job.
I've now been proved wrong (not for the first time!)

Yet again Symantec have proved their collective incompetence.

What I had to remove was Norton Backup. I have other ways I would prefer backing up my system. They really shouldn't include this stuff on the Windows install that comes with System Recovery on some computers. They should either make the install optional or just not put it there at all.

Many of the newer paid for anti virus are including so much unwanted things.
People end up with all this garbage and all they wanted was a anti virus program. Because much of this garbage runs under the protection of a anti virus program it hard to remove.

Even years ago when removing any anti virus program one had to do several registry searches to find all the garbage left over. I use to change anti virus programs every few months. When a new article came out stating the new greatest anti virus I would buy it. Then I discovered that those articles were bought and paid for garbage I install MSE for a test run. The first and only free anti virus program I have ever used and still do.

I will stick with MSE. No frills, just works for me. It always works with Windows 7 with only small problems every now and then.
The great point is Windows 7 and MSE play well together.
