fresh install of windows 7 - hangs on checking for updates

    Hello,

I have a Toshiba laptop that will not do Windows updates. It just hangs on checking for updates. Here's what I have done.

completely wiped and reformatted hard drive
fresh install of of 2 different versions of windows 7 - Home premium - what the laptop came with, and Win 7 starter (mine), and I have the same problem with both

changed update options to check, but let me install
I've done MS fixit 50202 in aggressive mode
System Update Readiness Tool for Windows 7 (KB947821)
I've done the stop wuauserv and bits services, deleted the SoftwareDistribution folder and restarted services.

It just hangs on checking for updates - eventually all network activity stops, cpu hangs around 50% and memory at about 60%, with all that being taken up by svhost

I even checked to see if the network adapter needed newer drivers...
the machine seems to be running fine - I can get online, and can install other programs..

    CBS log attached,

    Thanks for your help

    Hi and welcome to SevenForums,
Not sure if your case is the same but several people have seen the same stall and mostly because a couple hundred updates were actually being installed without notice :/

Click Start and right click the Computer listing on the right column and click on Properties,
On the bottom make sure windows is activated
If not click on activate now.

Yep, it's activated, and I did see those posts, so I've left it running - it's now been going 90 minutes..no change, but I'll leave it going another couple of hours at least...
