Just got this one as an optional update anyone know what it is for?

Not a single thing on either google or Microsoft site searches.

It updates the Windows Update client.

Thank you, M$ must have just posted that 11 mins ago I see, strange that it is only optional then. I'm looking out to avoid any other new telemetry or Windows 10 related updates.
Hopefully if there is any more useful info on exactly how and what the update does to the update client it can be posted here.

kb3083324 has been withdrawn from my list of updates to install whilst checking for updates this evening. So Microsoft must have changed their mind about that one. (I had left it uninstalled and not hidden whilst researching...)

Yes true KB3083324 has been pulled from windows updates.
The recent turn of events prior to and after the launch of Windows 10 is extremely worrying and does now seem to point to a conspiracy to either force us all on to windows 10, install the telemetry and spying tools on Windows 7 or sabotage our operating systems, giving us little choice to move to Linux.

For the moment the only option is to switch off windows updates and check everything manually but M$ seem more unwilling to give out any info on new updates which in turn will lead to mistrust any info they might give. Have they been forced to do such by the US govt I wonder. I can really see this backfiring on them very very badly especially in the business market where confidence will plummet.

There are those on other forums who are looking deep into windows 10 and what they are finding in terms of these new tracking and spy tools is very alarming. There is definitely something odd going on and more people are beginning to realise this now.

On the other side of the coin:

There are users and companies that are intentionally allowing all Windows 7 telemetry to be gathered in the hopes of creating a better Windows product line.

Microsoft owns the operating system. They can do whatever they want with it* (within applicable laws). You are only licensed to use Microsoft's operating system.

*sure MS can upset some users. Doing so has not significantly hurt their market share - yet.

Now I always wait 1-2 weeks before installing optional windows updates. Some I never install. Even security updates can wait a few days now. I have often wondered what the effect is on your system if you installed one of these MS withdrawn updates. It could be anywhere from minor to catastrophic. If something goes wrong you may not attribute it to an update and it would be difficult to track down because MS no longer provides details on what the update addresses. KB3083324 was there for at least 3 days, so a lot of people would have checked it for install. Fortunately I did not. I prefer to let others be the crash test dummies.

KB3083324 has been available for testing since early August...
...just not available to the general public via WU.

If something goes wrong, you don't have to know the cause, you just restore the OS partition to a prior day using a system image. It is fine if you want to wait and let others (who know how to recover) be the crash test dummies. Post #7 was dealing with the "tin foil hat" aspect of these updates - not the timing of applying (or recovering from) them.

Im not to worried about the privacy issues in 10 as its part of the terms/conditions, but on 7 i think that they are breaching thier own conditions, no where does it state they are allowed to do it, and i think it was pulled because of this.
