I don't know why you're having problems with checking for updates - I have Windows 10 downloaded and waiting for install on this machine, and I have no problems with either checking for updates, or installing such updates as I want.

My settings are to download Microsoft Updates but let me choose when to install them.

There should be an option to 'see all available updates' just under the offer of Windows 10 on the Windows Update page? - Are you not seeing that?

Many thanks NoelDP. In view of what you say I have just changed my Update setting to "Download updates but let me choose when to download them" but regret to say that I still get the drop down warning preventing me to do so when I click "Check for Updates" - unless of course I click the "Restart" button and start the upgrade, which I don't want to do. As a matter of interest my OS is W7 Ultimate x 32 and I am wondering if that makes any difference.

I must admit I'm getting weaker by the minute over this but I intend to hang in there until someone or MS come up with the solution. Many thanks.

I don't think the version/edition/bitness make any difference to the behaviour - it'd get too complex if it did
Perhaps there's a problem elsewhere that is interfering?
Just in case...
Please follow the Windows Update Posting Instructions and post the requested data

If the file is too large (8MB compressed), remove the older CBSPersist cab files until the final file is below the limit - you can always post them separately after zipping them. (the forum doesn't allow the upload of bare CAB files, for a number of reasons)

Please also post the C:\Windows\windowsudpate.log file

Hi,
Did you use option 1's .reg file yet to Disable installing updates on shutdown ?
Shut Down Windows - Enable or Disable "Install Updates and Shut Down"

If so kill the update process too,
Was there a problem following these instructions here ?
Scared and Very Confused - Windows 10

I personally don't know why you want to check for updates until you get rid of the win-10 update from installing ?

If you have any problems following the instruction please post exactly where and we can try to clear the language as much as possible

Possibly Noel can say how exactly to delete the GWX folders where windows 10 exists since he has them and I do not ?

Many thanks Thrashzone and Noel DP for your kind efforts to solve my problem but I am afraid it's getting all too technical for me. Fortunately, I cloned my original OS disk earlier this year which I will use from now on and although it will mean catching up with everything, at least I can avoid scheduling W10 which seems to be the cause of it all..

Once again, many thanks both of you.
