    Win 7 - Updates fail - 8007370B - VMware Guest Install

    Hi,

Would really appreciate some assistance with this, updates have been failing for some time on a windows 7 (Home Premium x64) VM with the code 8007370B, I have tried everything I (and Dr Google) can think of but to no avail. Cannot get it to play along.

Host is a VM so I can revert back to a snapshot if any attempted fixes fail, so at this stage am happy to give anything a go.

    All suggestions gratefully received!

You have a number of bitflips present - which often indicates hardware problems... most often with RAM

I would suggest testing your RAM using Memtest86+ - run at least 3 full passes initially and see what it reports... RAM - Test with Memtest86+

    Code:

If the Memtest passes, I need to have a look at your COMPONENTS registry hive

Please copy the C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS file (no extension) to your desktop and then compress it - upload the compressed file to your favoured fileshare site (preferably Dropbox or OneDrive) and post a link.

There is indeed considerable corruption present - I'll have a go at it, but it may be easier/quicker to do a repair install, (or go back to a snapshot and see if the corruption is still present - it appears to revolve around an IE9 install?)

Thank you, very grateful for your help!

I have tried a repair install that also bailed out, I forget why now, I will give it another shot....

Hi, attempted the repair/in place upgrade again, and it dies with "Setup can't continue. Restart the computer and restart Setup. When prompted try getting the latest update"

I did try as it suggested but it quits with the same error, is it safe to surmise that this behavior is due to the system being unable to perform updates?

It would be great if we could get to the point where the in-place upgrade works, I am more than happy to go down that route. Rebuilding this box from scratch is going to be a whole world of pain.

Please help me Noel, you are my only hope... :)

Thank you! - I have my fingers firmly crossed, which other than making it tricky to type, has resulted in spilt beer, not good.

I've managed to fix some of the errors - but the file still manages to crash my parsing tool Maybe Windows will have more luck?

    I've uploaded a file - mbsaa.zip - to my OneDrive at Noel's OneDrive
Please download and save it to your desktop.
Right-click on the file and select Extract All, and save to the default destination (which should be a folder on the desktop)

Create a new System Restore point

Open an Elevated Command Prompt, and run the following commands.

    Code:
    IF EXIST C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS.OLD1 DEL C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS.OLD1
    REN C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS COMPONENTS.OLD1
    COPY "%userprofile%\desktop\mbsaa\COMPONENTS" C:\Windows\System32\config

    .
If you get an error with any command, STOP THERE - do not reboot! - post for instructions.

Assuming all commands go OK, reboot, and run another CheckSUR scan - post the new CheckSUR.log file.
