Jeesh! You are a patient fellow!
The updates continue to pour in, so I have included that log as well.

    CheckSUR is clear
The files in the winsxs folder have been replaced, apparently
Please run SFC /SCANNOW again - if it comes back with the same errors, then please post the COMPONENTS registry hive...

I need to have a look at your COMPONENTS registry hive

Please copy the C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS file (no extension) to your desktop and then compress it - upload the compressed file to your favoured fileshare site (preferably Dropbox or OneDrive) and post a link.

    COMPONENTS & fresh CBS

Had a hard time copying COMPONENTS. Got message saying it was open by SYSTEM. Finally booted to "repair my computer" and was able to copy it. Here's the .ZIP of it and CBS.log.

sfc seems not to have found any problems:
    Microsoft Windows [Version 6.1.7600]

    C:\Users\Administrator>sfc /scannow

Beginning system scan. This process will take some time.

Beginning verification phase of system scan.
    Verification 100% complete.

Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.

    Thanks for your persistence!

    Bad new, I'm afraid...
This machine appears to have started life with the Preview version of Windows 7 - and part of it is still stuck there
The COMPOENTS hive is missing a LOT of information.

    Your only options are either
    1) a Repair install
    2) a reformat/reinstall.

I am saddened by this news, of course, but I am glad to get to the bottom of it.
Thank you for all your attention.

Do you think I would have any luck copying a COMPONENTS file from some other machine?
