My winsxs is currently showing ~25GB in Windows Explorer - it's never had the cleanup tool run on it, because I need the files and data I'd lose if I did run it

Disk Cleanup advises me that I'd free up 8.92GB if I used WU Cleanup - and another 920MB by removing the SP1 Backup files. :)

    Not gonna happen!

Yep windows update cleanup has been buggy for the last year I believe and will produce repeat updates
Not many if I recall I use it on every clean install without any major issues occurring,
The minor issue is reinstalling a few updates = no big deal

Also do you get to choose cleanup settings if you use this command from the Start> Run dialog box?

    C:\Windows\System32\cleanmgr.exe sageset:1

    (Replace 1 with any number)

Then try running disk cleanup using:

    C:\Windows\System32\cleanmgr.exe sagerun:1

Replace 1 with the same number used for sageset.

    If those don't work try:

    RUNAS C:\Windows\System32\cleanmgr.exe sageset:1

    RUNAS C:\Windows\System32\cleanmgr.exe sagerun:1

I see the winsxs full moon is out again.

The way I treat winsxs is so very simple it hurts.
    I just leave it alone.
You may be able to save a few MB of space but why take the chance.
winsxs hurts nothing and could come a time where it can be very helpful.

    yes.
this works but only as cleanmgr.exe sageset:1

the full line of: C:\Windows\System32\cleanmgr.exe sageset:1
    produces no results

this is the same as above

    however cleanmgr.exe sagerun:1

will pull up the scanning status bar, ill see it search through the files.
then once it gets done the actual cleaning option/window never pops up

i just tried both of these
the only thing it did was pull up a DOS screen for 1/2 a second then disappear

Okay ignore RUNAS command lines. It doesn't work for me either. The advice form other members to leave WINSXS alone is good advice as incorrect cleanup could leave you unable to remove some programs or updates.

So C:\Windows\System32\cleanmgr.exe sageset:1 should work to set options.

RUNAS C:\Windows\System32\cleanmgr.exe sagerun:1 should run the cleanup automatically according to setting in sageset:1 with no options available when running the cleanup.

You can also try right clicking on %windir%\system32\cleanmgr.exe and run as administrator.

You should also check that you have the following update installed:

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/kb/2852386

You may also refer to the tutorial here that suggests a different command line:

How to Use Extended Disk Cleanup in Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8

Personally I run extended disk cleanup using software to launch favorite commands but I mention that for information purposes only.
