Windows 7 deactivated itself and is not genuine anymore

Hello,

Today i logged in to my computer and a popup saying that my windows is not genuine came up. I was very confused as i have been using this same computer and windows for more than 3 and half years now. Im using an OEM version of windows but i havent had any hardware changes in the computer. I think it might be cause of a failed installation of Windows 10 as i did try to install it to my PC about a month ago. Also i do not have the original activation key.

The install is counterfeit - you have a Product Key from a DELL machine on a retail ECS motherboard.

From where did you acquire this copy of Windows?

Just for information, the motherboard was probably manufactured soon after October 2011 - the BIOS is dated 20111027.

Is there a COA sticker on the machine? If not then complain to the vendor and demand a refund under threat of court/police action.

There's something I don't understand... people on this forum are constantly advised to "buy OEM" when they need an affordable copy of Windows... but when an OEM copy of Win7 is actually purchased and installed, it's suddenly labeled "counterfeit" when a problem rears its ugly head.

How can something that people are advised to do be labeled as something acceptable as long as no problems arise, and when one does pop up, people are suddenly on their own?

The difference is they are being advised to buy system builder OEM copies from retailers.

The OEM copies being labeled counterfeit are from manufacturers like Dell, HP, etc.

Huh. A most unwelcome technicality.

Normally I just see people say to "buy OEM". I rarely see people say to specifically search for and buy only "System Builder OEM" copies exclusively.
