The permissions on the copy in System32 are definitely not correct! -

Open an Elevated Command Prompt, and run the following commands:

    ICACLS C:\Windows\System32\dnsapi.dll /grant Administrators: (RX)
    ICACLS C:\Windows\System32\dnsapi.dll /grant Users: (RX)
    ICACLS C:\Windows\System32\dnsapi.dll /grant "NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM": (RX)
    ICACLS C:\Windows\System32\dnsapi.dll /grant "NT SERVICES\TrustedInstaller": (F)
    ICACLS C:\Windows\System32\dnsapi.dll /remove Everyone
    ICACLS C:\Windows\System32\dnsapi.dll

post the results, then reboot and see if that affects your errors.

Ooops! - in an effort to get around the problem of smileys in my post, I inserted spaces where they are apparently not allowed :(

    Try this set instead...

Open an Elevated Command Prompt, and run the following commands:

    ICACLS C:\Windows\System32\dnsapi.dll /grant Administrators:(RX)
    ICACLS C:\Windows\System32\dnsapi.dll /grant Users:(RX)
    ICACLS C:\Windows\System32\dnsapi.dll /grant "NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM":(RX)

    ICACLS C:\Windows\System32\dnsapi.dll /remove Everyone
    ICACLS C:\Windows\System32\dnsapi.dll

post the results, then reboot and see if that affects your errors.

    For Noel

Hi Noel, I am not sure what is happening with this thread. When I display the thread, the latest exchanges are missing. I get here only by following the links in the emails.

This was the result last Thursday - some progress but dnsapi.dll still awol.

I hope I am not trying your patience too much.

No problem - except at my end, because of poor eyesight.
Please see my post #24 and follow the instructions in that.

Hi - same as when I ran it on Thursday I think.

Windows not genuine errors have gone but Skype still says it cannot download dnsapi.dll and the browsers don't work. I can now connect to the internet through the command window and ping a site though an unidentified network is still listed but secondary to the main and working wireles connection.

    Hope all that makes sense,\Jo

    Oooh! - very different.
everything worked properly except for this one...

NT SERVICES\TrustedInstaller: No mapping between account names and security IDs
    was done.
This implies that the TrustedInstaller entity is broken - which would prevent almost anything (windows-wise) from installing properly

Having said that, it may be enough to solve at least part of the problem.

Try running an SFC /SCANNOW again - what happens.

For Noel - sfc/scannow validates OK but kills internet OK

The verification was fine as you will see below but dnsapi.dll still cannot be downloaded and the internet connection died.

The internet situation is better than before though. The home group is not broken. The extra connection is there. My main connection has just died.

    C:\Windows\system32>sfc /scannow

Beginning system scan. This process will take some time.

Beginning verification phase of system scan.
    Verification 100% complete.

Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.
