Checking for Updates - Freezes

Windows 7 Pro 64 on Thinkpad T61p T9300
This computer was working and updating fine. Powered up for the first time in about 5 months. Not sure if this is related.

Windows Update goes into a never ending loop "Checking for Updates". By monitoring C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore\Logs and Resource Monitor I can things stop about 10 minutes.

Reset all as per:
Windows Update - Reset

sfc /scannow reports no problems

Windows Update Diagnostic reports issue "Service registration missing or corrupt, fixed", but an immediate rerun of the diagnostic repeats the same error message implying it was not fixed.

Downloaded Windows Update Standalone Installer (aka SURT) which also goes into a never ending loop "Searching for updates on this computer".

System protection was turned off so rolling it back is not an option.

SURT can take a couple of hours to run (I think the record for a successful scan is around 6 hours!) - just leave it alone until it either finishes or crashes out, then post the C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log file.

Windows Updates keeps checking for updates
Hi guys, so I got this new-to-me Acer Aspire 5315 laptop as a gift from a friend whose new laptop I just cleaned (still angry about lenovo's bloatware obsession). For the complete specs I included the full DxDiag.txt output. So I freshly installed Windows 7 Ultimate x64 SP1 on it, and for three...

Checking for updates
This is only a minor thing but I noticed tonight that under security updates the 'last check for updates' was on Thursday 4th June over two days ago. Normally the computer checks for updates every 24 hours. Tonight when I switched on this did not happen. I left the computer idle for an hour and no...

Checking my updates?
Alright, so I know you can check Windows updates through system & security, and that tells me I have all my updates. However, ESET nod 32 suddenly decided to tell me when I logged on that I was missing some important updates (ActiveX killbit and some other I don't remember, but some were...
