Windows 7 showing 2 days for activation while upgrading to windows10

I have a dell laptop with windows 7 Ultimate installed on it (Came preinstalled with laptop). Have been using since last 2 years.
2 days back I decided to upgrade to windows 10 (hey, free stuff ).
I selected Upgrade now option (Not iso/USB), it downloaded, did few things and started installing. While it was configuring (Big blue circle that comes) it failed at 5%. Mostly reason was C drive space was very less (8Gb free).
So it rolled back to windows 7. SO I decide to clear up some things, so uninstalled some stuff . got around 21GB in my C Drive now.
Restarted my machine and tried to install windows 10. But this time it somehow asked for Product Key (There is no SKIP option)
I went to system properties, to my surprise now it was showing 2 days till activation. I clicked on activate now and put my windows 7 ultimate key, but it did not accept.
Just did Genuine check on my windows , it said my copy of Windows is Genuine. But still it messed up with windows 7 license somehow. I am not getting call Support desk option anywhere, as some forums mention. Please help me.
Now I am stuck as I cannot upgrade. What are my options?

Hello rohit404404 Welcome to the Seven Forums!

I think you may want to stop by SF's sister site for some information and help regarding the upgrade while I can point you to one guide there that could be a large help for you in getting this problem cleared up. Clean Install Windows 10 Directly without having to Upgrade First

The guide there may just be able to bail you out of this one while you could still try either to enter the product key found on the sticker attached usually on the bottom of a laptop unless too new where it is embedded into the firmware where you then will need a product key tool to recover and enter it in with. That's found in any guide but from an independent source. ShowKeyPlus

If you are able to get 7 to activate itself again automatically or do have to call into MS to explain what happened and get 7 activated with help you can then save a lot of time and effort following the steps in the guide there seeing a clean install rather then sloppy often buggy upgrade type install! And the one thing most never realize is that they should have made a full system image backup before trying anything like this just in case.

Thank you Night Hawk, but I do not want to do clean installation for below reason.
1. I have lot of configuration and software installed.
2. I am not sure, if I do this and windows 10 is also not validated then I cannot go back to windows 7.

Why am I seeing this issue after 2 years. . DO you need some more logs or something to pipoint the issue?

I am not able to reach MS support guys , I don't see phone call option at all.

Who installed Ultimate on it ? I seriously doubt if Dell did, certainly not 2 years ago. (custom order maybe)

Someone could have installed Ultimate and used an activator and now it`s giving you problems during the upgrade.

Does the laptop have a COA (Certificate of Authentication) that clearly says Windows 7 Ultimate on it ?

Microsoft only gives you support if you buy and install a Retail version of windows.

For support for your laptop you would call Dell, not Microsoft.

UI has identified your problem.

You have to install the original operating system that came with the laptop or you have to buy Windows 10 if you want to install it. Or Windows 7 if you want to install that.

And you can only upgrade from Windows 7 Service Pack 1 or Windows 8.1 to 10 for free, until July 29th 2016

Your COA will tell you what version of windows was originally installed on the PC from Dell.

I thought it was a bit odd hearing the Ultimate edition was on any laptop while Dell does offer the chioce of OS option that began years back with Vista and the rejection that was getting back then.

The latest news however has MS wanting to grant amnesty for Non Genuine Windows installs by upgrades to 10 however. MS wants to get people out of the bogeys and into the legit end of things! The suggestion before however wasn't about a clean install of 7 but simply finding the correct product key to enter in that Windows install you have to see it activated properly again since you were saying it became unactivated lately?

Once activated you would then be able to see the upgrade install if preferred while a clean install generally offers the best results since upgrades can turn out buggy at times! Whenever going to try out any newer version taking things slow and testing each program individually tends to show which ones need to see a newer version or won't run at all while others will simply go on without fuss.

It`s not a good idea to try and upgrade an older laptop to Windows 10, you have to run the compatabilty check 1st.

There may not be any windows 10 video drivers etc. etc. etc.

If you want to keep Ultimate on that laptop, then you`ll have to find a legitimate key for it.

Good Luck with that

When I check if my windows is Genuine, why do I see its valid and genuine. I have been using this PC since last 2 years and getting all the updates service packs as well.

Maybe because you still have 2 days left til you have to activate, after that it might not show as genuine anymore.
