Ah nice, I'll wait for his response.

Yeah, I don't seem to have sp1 installed so that will come in handy, thanks.
I cant find my win 7 disk so I guess I'd have to do the iso option.

Need to upload file NoelDP asked for so he can take peek.

Please copy the C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS file (no extension) to your desktop and then compress it - upload the compressed file to your favoured fileshare site (preferably Dropbox or OneDrive) and post a link.

Yea, you did, long night last night, brain fade!! LOL

Beginning to think I'm in the same boat as LayBack Bear, 3 brain cells. LOL

Since you're receiving that error, logically that seems to me to confirm corrupt hive.

I know I've had programs that I couldn't access & solution was to reinstall it.

Do you agree?

Hehe.

Yep, I guess it is the only option. Tomorrow I'll do the reinstall following shawn brinks guide carefully.
I always get nervous when doing things like this, worried I'll lose everything.

Hopefully it'll be alright, I'll just make to do all what the guide tells me.

I have only 2gb left on my main HD, I'm guessing I should free up some space before reinstalling?
Might transfer a bunch of important stuff over to my 2nd hd anyway just to be safe.

Do system backup, always prudent.

When you do repair install, it saves a folder WindowsOld, you can revert system if you have uncorrectable issues after repair install (usually not the case)

Watch the Britec video on the subject, link I included in prior post.

Follows the repair install by Shawn.

Should help ease your mind.

'Can't red from source file' means to me that there is something seriously wrong - possibly a failing HD.

I'd back up your data first, and then run a full CHKDSK /R to check for bad sectors, before doing anything else.

Just a note.

Make sure you have plenty of room for your install. Many things with Windows 7 will not work properly if it doesn't have room to work with.

This sure is a troublesome situation.

I tried downloading the iso files but was met with this message:
'We encountered a problem with the product key you provided'

I used the key finder that briteck recommended, so I definitely didn't type it out wrong.
So I don't understand why it doesn't take it.

Geez, I hope not. Didn't seem to come up with any errors when I did the chkdsk though.

Let's have a look at the logs -
Open Event Viewer
click on the Windows logs entry in the left pane to expand it.
Now click on the Application entry - wait while it loads.
Click on 'File' in the menu bar and select Save...
Save the file as Appevt.evtx
Repeat for the System log
then zip both, and upload them.
