Windows has never updated? (error code 80080005)

    Hello,

Looks like I need a little help with my windows.
It seems I am unable to update at all, as I am getting an error code 80080005 when I try to check for updates.

I recently noticed that I don't have service pack 1 installed, which I now need to run a program.

Downloaded SURT and it tried to install hotfix for windows, but it later said updates were not installed (KB947821).

I tried the sfc scan but it said it couldn't start the repair service, maybe I didn't do it right?

Here's what the cbs logs say:
    Code:
    Starting TrustedInstaller initialization.
2015-10-17 22:42:02, Info CBS Loaded Servicing Stack v6.1.7600.16385 with Core: C:\Windows\winsxs\amd64_microsoft-windows-servicingstack_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7600.16385_none_655452efe0fb810b\cbscore.dll

If anyone can assist me in solving the issue, that would be just great.

    Thanks,

Click Start ORB, lower left windows logo, type cmd, when cmd.exe appears, right-click choose>Run As Administrator

run the bold command below: (copy & paste to aviod typos) into cmd.exe at >

    NETSH WINSOCK RESET

error messages ending in 0005 are often 'access denied' errors - try this...

    1. Open Windows Update
    2. click on Change Settings
    3. select 'Never check for updates' in the dropdown - click OK
    4. Exit Windows Update
    5. now go back to Windows Update
    6. Click on Change Settings
    7. Select 'Install Updates Automatically'
    8. Click OK
    9. now try manually checking for updates.

    Still same error?

What anti-virus are you running? Norton is famous for issues!

Did one come preinstalled your your machine?

    Any anti-malware programs running?

I run the Avast Free, Malware bytes premium, & Malwarebytes anti-exploit. I think they're excellent.

It looks to me as if your COMPONENTS registry hive is corrupted

I don't believe there is anything that can be done to repair a corrupt registry hive.

Recommended fix Repair Install by Shawn Brink great tutorial by the way

Britec Computer has a video on it Repair Install to Fix Windows 7 Without Reformatting

Brian is an awesome guy who beleives most anyone can repair computer with a little knowledge on issue. I subscribe to his YouTube channel and watch most of his videos.

Don't fret, repair install will preserve all your installed programs, files, folder, music, video, pictures, etc. I do them all the time.

It saves a folder called Windows.Old, which, as the name implies, your system before repair install, you can revert to if attempted repair install fails (not very often) I've done 3 in the past few days.

After you run your repaired windows & everthing is up and running to your satisfaction, you can delete the Windows.Old file. How to delete Windows.Old

Usually you will have minor issues.

For one, Avast will have a side-by-side configuration conflict.

How to solve, click Control Panel>Uninstall Programs>Avast>Change>Repair.

After Avast starts, background services failed to start. Open Avast Control Panel, choose>Repair All and wait a few minutes & Avast will be up and running.

Might have to uninstall and reinstall Adobe Flash if you try to run videos & they crash immediately. Had this issue on desktop.

Might have to delete printer & reinstall, choose new driver, (not use one that is installed (recommended))

Windows Media Player might not function.

Solution, open Turn Windows Features On or Off, click + along side Media Features, uncheck Windows Media Center & Windows Media Player. Reboot is required. Windows applies updates, restarts. Turn those features back on again.

    Two things you will need:

    1. Windows 7 x64 DVD or ISO file
    2. Windows 25 character product key.

If you don't have DVD you can download ISO from Microsoft Download Center

You can't copy & past ISO (image file) with Windows copy & paste, you have to burn ISO disc. I use ImgBurn (free) I like free.

How to burn win7 ISO to disk with ImgBurn.

    Download ImgBurn

If you don't have windows product key, it's in the registry in binary form (ones & zeros).

Run attached batch file. It will convert binary to alphanumeric and display it for you

I usually copy 5 characters, skip line on paper, copy 5 characters, etc. Then double/triple check that it matches. Easy to transpose characters or write C when it should have been G. (windows doesn't use A, 1 (one), or 0 (zero) in product key.

When doing repair install one screen offers Upgrade as option, that the one you want (it doesn't actually upgrade just reinstalls Windows 7)

If you are presented a choice of Windows i.e. (Starter, Basic, Home Premium, Professional, or Ultimate) choose the operating system you have. (it's called AIO (all-in-one). Every Windows 7 ISO or DVD has all versions installed, what controls whether it's a certain version is ei.cfg file, which you can uninstall in from the ISO, manually or with eicfg_removal_utility.zip

I ran the tool on my Win7x32 and Win7x63 discs to simplify the repair install, fresh install process.

If you need any additional help, please feel free to ask.

Please post your results (problem solved?)

I suspect that the COMPONENTS registry hive is corrupt -
I need to have a look at your COMPONENTS registry hive

Please copy the C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS file (no extension) to your desktop and then compress it - upload the compressed file to your favoured fileshare site (preferably Dropbox or OneDrive) and post a link.

Ah, that doesn't sound good at all.

Thanks for all the info, really helpful. It seems like that would be a guarantee to solve it, even if it does seems like the last resort.

So there's definitely no other way to fix the corruption?

I've tried to copy the file but it gives me 'can't read from the source file or disk'

Thanks for chiming in NoelDP. Definitely follow his advice, he's the expert.

Dark Eyes, one thing I forgot to mention regarding repair install.

If you don't have Kb976932 (service pack 1) installed, click windows updates, lower left corner, then in upper right corner enter the kb in the searchbox.

If it not there, or your not sure it's installed properly, you can use compatibility mode for Windows 7 for repair install.

If you use DVD and have your DVD's set to autorun, the DVD will try to auto run, if it does just exit the program, right-click DVD, choose> open, right-click Setup.exe, click properties, click Compatibility tab, click checkbox Compatibility mode, select Windows 7
