    Not needed msg in WU

This is the first time I have ever seen this message from windows update. "Not needed". Does this mean I was not supposed to have received these updates? A mistake from WU?

I have WU set to notify, do not download. I selected 4 updates from the Nov. update: IE cumulative update and the 3 Net Framework updates. The remainder I left unchecked. The screen then showed the 4 that I selected and I clicked on OK. WU downloaded 40+MB, then I got this message: " Not Needed" . I opened installed update history and nothing that I selected had been installed. I then selected just one of the 4 updates I had chosen previously (the IE com. update) and it created a restore point and showed the progress of the install - then it showed as successfully installed. I restarted the PC. Then I did the same for the 3 NetFramework updates - the install started and I got the message that the install completed successfully, restart required. I did so and the 3 NetFramework updates are still listed as available. Odd.

WU is smarter than you think

    Hi Painter,
WU actually checks if the updates selected need to be run .
info can can be found in the WU update logs.

For example if you install them out of sequence, and you run a later dated cumulative and then an earlier dated specific one it will download but not install with the message you have seen.

    These processes run concurrently.

    IT IS NOT an error.

Thanks to both of you for responding. I left my PC on (I had work to do elsewhere) and noticed there was no change to the status of those 3 updates over several hours, then in the 4th hour, without my having done anything, all 3 updates in question showed on the install list and no longer on the available list.

I can only guess that there was no contact with the windows server over those several hours. Maybe that is all that was preventing the list from being updated. My system was idling at around 3-5% all that time.

@wben353. Even though everything looked OK, I ran the 'reset' anyway and all is good. No errors.

My system was up to date with all previous updates prior to the November updates.

    Good guess,

Many posts, including some from me outlining issue with win7 updates taking forever. Clean install & repair install are taking several hours, in most of my cases, less than 6, however, some forum members are reporting 24-48 hours, most overnight period. See Microsoft bulletin regarding KB3102810

    Happy Computing?
