It seems I get one GWX entry in the registry after every bootup. The GWX entry has one sub-entry called "Reservation". It is always empty or "value not set". There is only one GWX entry in my registry and if I delete it, it returns after the next bootup. Restart will not set it, but a cold boot will. I assume that it is being set by one of the GWX related files on my system that can not be deleted because they are "SYSTEM" files. I still have all of the W10 updates hidden.I get no notifications for W10 in WU or on the System Tray, so I guess I can assume that I am currently immune to W10 for the moment. Will still keep up the eternal vigilance.

Last night, I installed the 12/08/15 updates, but not KB3112423 without any issues. This morning I searched the registry for GWX entries and found over a dozen keys with gwx related executables that weren't there before. I don't know what they are, nor which update installed them, but now I have concerns that one, or more, of the updates are responsible. Just a heads up to see if anyone else had this happen. Pictures at 11.

Also, all of the GWX related folders that I deleted from the hard drive previously, are now back. Deletion is blocked with the message that "Trusted Installer" permission is required. I tried the normal method to change permissions, but was denied as the administrator. Guess I'll try Brink's Take Ownership Shortcut when I have the time.

Not all hope is lost; they didn't mention Linux. Going back to Commodore C64c is tempting, though.

I think i inadvertantly found a way of not getting it, without involving much work.
Uninstall IE11, and use another browser.

I was reinstalling SP1, with IE8, did the updates in stages, last was IE, prior to that had no GWX downloads/prompts or issues,
installed 11 bang got hit by GWX.

Nope, that's not it. I've been using IE11 for over a year and haven't been hit with GWX.

I too have this empty key, and by itself IMO is of no concern. Executables on the other hand...

I have not yet decided to Approve 3112343 but it appears to me to be innocuous i.e. basically "if you try to update sumpin could break".

I have no interest in W10, want to stick with W7, but what is troubling to me about becoming perhaps "overly selective" about individual Windows Updates, is that at some point one is going to get cross-wise with their system files. Simply put, MS testers no doubt do their testing on systems that have older updates installed to them. So if our systems are instead "picked and chosen" with different System Files than MS tested with, well... not good.

As Layback Bear it seems, I do have 3 registry entries but only one has any data, and that is "GStatus of 2" whatever that means. I won't worry about it so long as GWX_control_panel tells me I'm OK.

I use a free program called "gwx control panel". It has served me well so far.
