Malfunctioning Windows Update

Hi everyone,

I have been searching on google to find a solution to my problem but the information that I found isn't helpful and I do apologize if a similar thread was created on this forums, I didn't happen to find one.

My Windows Update has suddenly stopped functioning. When I try to access it on Control Panel, it takes about a minute to respond and when it does, it shows Windows Update disabled. When I try to turn it back on, it gives me the following error message.

Windows Update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer.

I did check the services and Windows Update service is on Automatic, which is weird. So, I did full virus and malware scan, nothing was found and I'am hopeless, don't know what else to do.

I would be grateful if someone could point me to the right direction. :)

For 32-bit Windows, open a command prompt (run as administer) and enter the following lines:
net stop wuauserv
regsvr32 %windir%\system32\wups2.dll
net start wuauserv

For 64-bit Windows, the second line differs due to the location of the DLL file:
net stop wuauserv
regsvr32 %windir%\syswow64\wups2.dll
net start wuauserv

For x64 systems wups2.dll is only in System32 folder too,there is no wups2.dll in SysWOW64 -check yourself using explorer or command prompt -not any 3p file manager because not all this kind of tools show correct file locations in system folders in x64 systems

I have the same problem as you do.
I've tried the "Fix It for Me" tool, it doesn't do anything.
Also, I tried the command, and it keeps giving me ACCESS DENIED response.

I don't know what to do!

I just bought a new laptop: SAMSUNG with W7 Home Premium 64bit.
No virus or anything on it. I've disabled all the anti virus protection just incase if they were interferring with the windows update. Nada.

I may be a little late on this topic. but anyways, I think sharing info won't hurt.

"Fix It for Me" tool does not work!

Here's what worked for me: Control Panel --> Windows Update
on the left sidebar, click Change Settings, I found the automatic updates was disabled, I enabled it and its all good now.

@Gold = Your 'Access Denied' could be because of admin rights.

i like tag on to this I update whenever im told there is a update but im having problems. windows 7 home permium often times updates stop half way or frezze or loose network. Often times I restart install updates then it redownloads same one, I tried two windows update fixers one from microsoft one from a windows forum. Neither offered permenant fix. Is there a better way to fix it and should I disable auto update and do it my self? to stop this from happening. I have a program says repairs windows update but I scared use one want know what you think I would make own post but I don't want make a 100posts today
