This update helped me a lot. It is the newer update client. The previous one caused me problems, searching for updates would take forever. After I installed this, it found about 200 updates within 20 minutes.

You should not be getting the update KB3138612 now, that was issued months ago. That update has already been superseded a couple of times. Has your Windows update been out of action for a while? Or have you hidden the July update rollup?

The fact that you're getting that update + KB2952664 offered now means that something isn't quite right with your updates. Even on a fresh install, you shouldn't be offered KB3138612 as it's been replaced already.

None of those updates were issued today, see here for more info:

    Hi, @Keithuk:

FWIW, I could be wrong, but I don't think KB3138612 has anything to do with GWX/Win10.
It's to improve function of WU client itself.

In fact, many people have reported that 3138612, along with 3020369, 3102810, 3145739 and 3172605 may help to resolve issues with Windows Update under Win7.

Also: GWX has ended and MS issued a patch last week to remove the GWX software from 7/8/8.1 systems, as mentioned here:

New KB3184143 Update to Remove Windows 10 Upgrade Offer

    Cheers,

    MM

    There were some updates today:

    Update for Windows 7 (KB3140245)
    Update for Windows 7 (KB3138378)
    Update for Windows 7 (KB2952664)
    Update for Windows 7 (KB3102429)
    Update for Windows 7 (KB3172605)
    Update for Windows 7 (KB3135445)

I was reluctant to install any after the problem I had yesterday. That's another story.

After I installed these updates and it restarted I open Windows Updates and click on history and copy and paste all updates into a txt file for reference. I check Windows Updates history and the only files shown are todays numbers. Previously when you click on history it shows all updates. I know you can open c:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log but its quicker to click on history.

I clicked on Installed Updates and uninstalled the 6 updates today. It restarted, I checked Windows Updates history and it still showed the 6 updates today. I uninstalled them again, restart and is shows the same 6 updates but only KB2952664 shows in control panel. I uninstalled it again.

It still shows the 6 updates today in history. I did a system restore which showed todays updates. I do a manual system update every night before I shut it down because its never worked for months (I have made a thread about this problem). I ticked show all restore point and it only shows today 24/09/2016, where have the rest gone?

I'm getting very peed off with Windows 7, I may as well disable automatic updates (with notification).

    Hi,
Sounds like you're not on auto updates to me :)

System images work a lot better at undoing things.

There were no MS updates released today. Check the link I sent you. Those updates are from months ago so something isn't right with your updates. One of those is even as far back as January.

Try this: Win 7 Updates Stuck on Downloading % For Three Days!!

It's fixed Windows Update on all my systems and VM's.

Not full auto update I have it "Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them".

That way I can copy and Google what they are about. If I don't like what's said I hide them.

I assure you these updates showed yesterday, they maybe old ones but that's what showed.

    Update for Windows 7 (KB3140245)
    Update for Windows 7 (KB3138378)
    Update for Windows 7 (KB2952664)
    Update for Windows 7 (KB3102429)
    Update for Windows 7 (KB3172605)
    Update for Windows 7 (KB3135445)

Then later 2 more updates showed.

    Update for Windows 7 (KB3139923)
    Update for Windows 7 (KB3112343)

    https://catalog.update.microsoft.com...px?q=KB3139923
    https://catalog.update.microsoft.com...px?q=KB3112343

There are from June and July but they still showed.

They may have showed up on your system yes, but those updates were not released or issued yesterday.
Try the fix I posted in the other thread I linked above, otherwise you might end up waiting months for updates to show up again. The fix has worked for me on many different installs. Otherwise I don't know what else to suggest.
