Win7 build 7601 not genuine error (product key no longer valid)
Hi everyone, hopefully someone can help me before I throw my laptop in the garbage out of frustration!
I bought a refurbished Lenovo Thinkpad last July (2015). I activated the product key, everything was fine. Then last week I turned on my laptop to find a message telling me my version of windows was likely to be counterfeit. My desktop background is now black with a message in the bottom right corner saying 'build 7601' 'this copy of windows is not genuine' '0x80070426'
It asked me to go online to validate my copy of windows, which I did, but the program was unable to validate it.
I tried re-entering my product key from the sticker and get the message that the key 'does not appear to be a valid win7 product key' (whether this is because I've already activated that key I don't know).
On the 'system' screen it does tell me that windows is activated, but it is also telling me to get a genuine copy or validate online.
I contacted Staples, where I bought it, who told me their vendor said the Win7 was genuine. Gee thanks.
So I phoned the vendor, who also told me it was genuine and gave me the phone activation number for MS, which I can't use because I can't access the phone activation screen because it wants me to validate, not activate.
To say I'm unhappy with the customer service experience is an understatement!!
I'm currently slogging through a free MS support online chat which I hold out zero hope for. Can someone here help?
