Win7 build 7601 not genuine error (product key no longer valid)

Hi everyone, hopefully someone can help me before I throw my laptop in the garbage out of frustration!

I bought a refurbished Lenovo Thinkpad last July (2015). I activated the product key, everything was fine. Then last week I turned on my laptop to find a message telling me my version of windows was likely to be counterfeit. My desktop background is now black with a message in the bottom right corner saying 'build 7601' 'this copy of windows is not genuine' '0x80070426'

It asked me to go online to validate my copy of windows, which I did, but the program was unable to validate it.
I tried re-entering my product key from the sticker and get the message that the key 'does not appear to be a valid win7 product key' (whether this is because I've already activated that key I don't know).
On the 'system' screen it does tell me that windows is activated, but it is also telling me to get a genuine copy or validate online.

I contacted Staples, where I bought it, who told me their vendor said the Win7 was genuine. Gee thanks.
So I phoned the vendor, who also told me it was genuine and gave me the phone activation number for MS, which I can't use because I can't access the phone activation screen because it wants me to validate, not activate.
To say I'm unhappy with the customer service experience is an understatement!!

I'm currently slogging through a free MS support online chat which I hold out zero hope for. Can someone here help?

Thanks Roy I will do that. I've just spent what seems like an eternity in an online chat with MS support who have told me my product key isn't genuine. I've no idea what bearing that has on anything, it has been working OK for about 8 months...

OK, I discovered I already had KB971033 installed. I'm not sure how to 'run' it, so I'm hoping having it already installed is sufficient (if there's something else I need to do just let me know!)

Here is what was produced by the diagnostic tool (interestingly I ran this myself earlier this afternoon but didn't know what to do with the info; on that occasion the output was slightly different in that there was a line before 'Validation Code: 50' which had red text and said something like 'not licensed'. It's not there this time round....

I hate laptops No clue why it`s telling you to validate.

What is validation and how does it work? - Windows Help

Hate to ask, but are you sure you are reading the key correctly ?

There should be no reason the key on your COA will not work to activate windows. Especially a system builders key.

Ya, it says you are using a Volume License Key and it`s blocked.

After you uninstall it, you should be Golden :)

Thanks for the reminder, I actually have Open Office now and really like it, but I couldn't find the uninstall for Office. I'll go looking for it again!
