Back again! I got a bubble message again telling me I needed to activate windows. I tried typing in my key again but I just got the same message as before - a problem occurred with activation, error 0x80070426.

I could do it again and try activating online, I don't know if that would make any difference. Can you tell whether the product key is genuine? I'm wondering about getting back in touch with the vendor and telling them it's not...

    Hi Izzi,
    Can you try this,

    1. net stop sppsvc

      cd %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareProtectionPlatform

      ren tokens.dat tokens.bar

      net start sppsvc

      cscript.exe %windir%\system32\slmgr.vbs /rilc

    then restart your comp.

I've only found 2 other instances of this specific error code, 1 ended up with a repair install, the other thread just "died" with no resolution..

Do you have a restore point where your system was genuine??,
If the above does not work then this maybe a solution otherwise its gonna be a reinstall/repair

On the other hand if you purchased this comp with the counterfiet Office suite installed you'll be

    Hi again

I just tried that, and when I got to the 'ren' line I got this message: "A duplicate file name exists, or the file cannot be found"

I'm guessing it shouldn't say that?

I'm a bit hesitant to say this... but...

    wooooooooohoooooooooooooooo!!

    It appears to have worked!!

When I restarted the laptop it said I needed to activate Windows. This time, instead of opting to retype the product key, I chose activate Windows online'. 30 secs later it said activation was successful, the error messages are gone and I have my audio and desktop background back (amongst other things I'm sure).

Thanks soooooo much for the assistance, you're miles better than the 2 suppliers I contacted and Microsoft!

    Hi Izzi,
still 1 odd error in there, but if you can download/install updates, should be all right.
You could run kb971033, if you want, or wait to see if the non genuine re-appears.

Thanks again for all the help :)

    It's me again
Unfortunately the next time I restarted my laptop the problem came right back - windows not genuine.
I contacted Staples and got a bit angry, and they put me in touch with the refurbisher. After a couple of attempts they seemed to be helpful, contacting Microsoft on my behalf. They said that MS told them the problem was becoming more frequent since the advent of Windows10, and that I would have to phone their support line so that they could remotely make some software changes.
'Great' I thought, except when I called the number I discovered they don't have any free tech support (apart from the completely useless online chat support which I've already used) and wanted to charge me.
I have emailed the refurbisher again to complain but I thought I'd post here again in case you had any other ideas! I guess there must be a fix if MS know about it; I wish they'd share it online!

    Hi Izzie,
    please run this
    reg query HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{B54F3741-5B07-11cf-A4B0-00AA004A55E8}\InprocServer32

    and post the output.

Can you tell me when you first got the lappy what AV was installed, i can see your using Comodo at the moment, please Uninstall it and use MSE for the moment.

    note
In one of my earlier posts i posted a smilie
IF Staples via thier supplier sold you a comp with a COUNTERFIET copy of Office installed
I WOULD phone Staples again and tell them that you are going to report them to MS for supplying computers with counterfiet goods included, also tell them your gonna tell the local press,
Wouldn't be surprised if they came straight back with an offer.

    Roy
