Windows 7 Updates Stuck at 0%, Won't Download

    Hello,

I just got a new Windows 7 Pro Dell Inspiron laptop. I was trying to download and install all the Windows Update available, but the download stuck at 0% for a long time and will not proceed any further. I have run the Windows Update FixIt tool, run the WindowsUpdateDiagnostic tool, nothing help.

I got this error: "windows update service registration is missing or corrupt" when I ran the Diagnostic.

I have tried several other "solutions" and still no help. And I have temporarily disable my anti-virus programs as well, no help.

    Any comments/suggestions are much appreciated.

    Thank you.

    Hello torchwood,

I already ran the tool. How do I post the report. It has my Activation ID on it. Please advise. And where can find the log?

The laptop is brand new and Windows 7 Pro was pre-installed and already activated by Dell before shipping.

I have also installed Microsoft .NET Framwork 4.6.1, thinking that might be the problem since my laptop did not come with the latest version. After I reboot, I started the Update again and it still stuck at 0% for more than half hour.

    Thank you.

    Hi Silk,
it tells you how to post the Mgadiag in that link.
There is NO personal data in it, youll find 100's of those reports in this sub forum,
for windows log just type it into the search option and post using the same instructions as above

OK, Something very strange is happening. I have left the Update opened and let it download, all these time, the download stuck at 0%. A few minutes ago, it started installing and now it is installing update 1 of 108 and processing. I have no idea what's going on. I'll post an update if the installations are successful or not.

It's not strange at all, there are many threads in Seven Forums about Windows Update taking a LONG time.
I think it's getting worse, you can read my comments about the latest updates here:
    Windows Updates not downloading

That is just one thread of many about this problem.
You can browse and read what folks are posting in SF about this issue.

I think the difference is that I was able to process the CHECKING, but when I started the DOWNLOAD process, it stuck at 0% and won't go any further. So, logically,. I thought the updates were not being downloaded. But from what I saw, it DID download, and now it's installing 77 of 108. The download process did not show up at the status bar as it should have been. So for me, I have no telling that it was being downloaded.

    I've also seen that happen.
I think MS Win 7 Windows Updates are terrible, and getting worse.
Like I said, browse the threads in SF about W7 Windows Updates problems, and see what you think.

I did read several of them. With my old Windows 7 Pro Dell laptop, I never did have any problems. I was able to install all MS updates. So I am very curious to know why my new laptop, with Windows 7 PRO, have such problem. Maybe Dell pre-installed something, which caused such a problem?

Anyway, I am glad I am able to process the updates finally.

    Here's my update:

Since my initial post, I have done four updates, two of them did not show the download progress, the progress bar stuck at 0% all the time, but the installation finally started and successfully installed. The other two, both showed the download progress and showed 100% downloaded and then successfully installed (but I have to install these two updates twice as the error code 80070308 occurred twice).

Now, MS Updates said there is no more updates for my computer.

I am glad this is all over. But still have no idea why the progress bar did not show the download progress with the first two updates, even though they were downloaded successfully.

Thank you to everyone for all of your kind assistance.
