KB954430 and KB973688 Problems - Again

KB973688 and KB954430 (An update for 973688) failed to install on 17 April. I don't do automatic updates but install them myself once a month from the downloaded updates list. I have trawled the internet regarding these two failures and it seems that these two updates have history going back seven years or more.

I don't know why Windows has tried to install these two updates at this time when they are obviously old updates. I have read all the web pages and not being a techie cannot and will not play around with the registry but one thing does intrigue me. This site https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/973688 tells me that I should check the version of the msxm14.dll file in C/Windows/System32. I do not have this file. I have msxm13.dll and msxm16.dll files.

I now see that Windows has added these two updates to my important updates list again so I have hidden them but I am not sure whether it might be an idea to have another go at installing them. Life really isn't long enough for all this nonsense.

Does anyone have any advice please? I feel inclined to ignore the whole business.
