Update after install has been running for nearly 24 hours. Problem?

Okay. My HDD seems to not be working. I got the black screen of death with a cursor with Windows 10. I used the Windows 7 install disc to try to reinstall on a HDD that we pulled out of my sons xbox. It loaded Windows 7 and seems to be working fine. Nothing else on the computer besides Internet Explorer 11 and Chrome.

Last night I started to run Windows Update. When I woke up this morning, my computer had turned itself off. So I started it back up and ran Windows Update again because nothing happened before. I started it this morning about 9am. Its now 9pm and its been running all day and still is.

I went into programs and it appears something may have happened at some point today because there are a few updates that were installed. Odd because update never did finish and I didn't tell it to update like when you have to click on things you want updated. Maybe it finally just showed up from the Update I tried to run last night. ????????????????

I know very little to nothing about computers. It just seems like a very long time to run the update and I wanted to make sure that its still working right. I thought maybe its just not doing what it is suppose to or something.

Could it actually take this long and still be looking for updates? I used a Dell provided Reinstallation DVD Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 64-Bit.

EDIT: adding more info: Day 2: So, now its 49 hours later and Windows update is still installing. Doesn't it usually quit looking for updates and give you the option to select which updates you want to install?

So yesterday it did install a few updates on its own. Those being:
    Update for Microsoft Windows (KB2888049), (KB2882822), (KB2834140), (KB2786081), (KB2731771), (KB2729094), (KB2639308), (KB2533623), (KB2670838), (KB976902) Microsoft Windows English Spelling package, and the English Hyphenation package.

Do you think that is all there is? The little icon in the lower right hand corner says there are updates still available. Why is it still running after 49 hours? Any recommendation would be appreciated. Thank you.

EDIT: adding more info. So, now its been about 60 hours and its still running?

I can't delete this. I added this memo to the above.

Well, it finally finished after like 4 days of trying to update. It worked. Just to forever and a day.
