Windows Update Error 80073712 Long term issue

    Hi,

So a little background. I've been unable to get a successful windows update for probably 2 years. Possibly longer. Numerous times I've sat down and spent a few days trying to resolve it and then given up and moved on, but I'm having other issues currently that I'd like to fix and thought I would try and start with this one in case correcting it may help in the other issues.

    • This is an aging installation, I believe initially installed in 2009
    • I no longer have the Windows Ult 64 installation disc, so I do not have the recovery options from disc, nor can I re-install
    • Being such a long term issue I of course do not have a recovery before the issue to work with
    • I plan to build a whole new system in the next year (waiting on the new processor families), so I'm trying to stretch this system out until that occurs
    • If memory serves correctly, I believe this began after a nasty virus, which my anti-virus managed to clean but it seemed to have some lasting damage as a result

    1. I've run SURT
    2. SFC does not work (I believe this is likely the root of my problems). CSI Unable to Query Store Version 0x00000002

Also. Malwarebytes is scanning my system as I type this, and I ran "CHKDSK C: /R" earlier tonight.

    Hi Bane,
sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

I've scoured the major forums for fix's to this 1 specific error, and it is only 1, WINSXS Component Hive corruption.
Every single instance in your CBS log shows that being the only error
The only option was a re-install
