    "windows not genuine" problems

I suddenly started getting the not genuine message and couldn't install updates any longer (error code 80080005). I noticed that my product key wasn't the same as the one on my laptop tag but when I tried changing it, it said it doesn't seem to be valid (which it is- I bought it as a return from BestBuy). I've tried every fix I can find online w/out success. When I tried slmgr.vbs /ato, it said the KMS service is unavailable. I've been using SLMGR -REARM but I only have 2 rearms left & still couldn't download or install updates anyways (I couldn't even install the system update readiness tool from MS), so I was thinking of maybe using WGA Remover from major geeks. On a side note, I've never been able to use any of Windows backup options except for being able to create restore points. I can't create a system image, system repair disc, or a full backup and gave up on that long ago after months of trying (I backup everything on a separate HD). Anyways, thanks for your help & here's my info:

Hi Die Microsoft, welcome to the Forum.

Your Windows operating system is a KMS Client version, that is designed for companies that buy a key from Microsoft so they can use it on multiple computers. It is not for home users.

So unfortunately yours is an illegal installation. You should take the laptop back to Best Buy explaining the problem & tell them you are reporting them to Microsoft & you expect a full refund of the purchase price.

For more information on KMS Client versions you can read through this Wikipedia website.

    Hi Die M,
The key currently on that comp, designated KMS, is not the standard Sony key for that model and system.
KMS activated systems rely upon either a company/Educational establishment to maintain its authenticity, and to keep it up to date.

    From your post
which it is I bought it as a >>> return <<< from BestBuy.
Do you still have the receipt for this purchase, and is it still under warrenty.
BestBuy have sold you a computer with a non genuine >> personal << product key.
You SHOULD take it up with them.

However we can reset the key,
from an elevated command please run the following

    slmgr /ckms

    REBOOT

rerun the Mgadiag the returned key should now read

    H9M26-6BXJP-XXFCY-7BR4V-24X8J

If not we need to rebuild the licencing store
    see the attached screenshot.

If you follow the instructions from the screenshot
AND the above key is still not present

    please resubmit your latest Mgadiag.

    EDIT
DO NOT use the sticker code until i tell you to

    Hi Ranger

    see my comment re BestBuy,
It is non-genuine but, if he follows my instructions it should be returned to its original set-up.

Thanks for that info Roy. I will keep it in mind.

Did that Sony laptop originally come with Windows 7 Professional installed?. If it didn't will the activation key on the case work?.
