updates available but NO system tray or shutdown notification

updates are set to "check for updates but let me choose...". when updates were available, the system used to
    1) show a system tray notification
    AND
    2) notify me [after clicking start -> shut down] about available updates

unfortunatelly, I realised that nor 1) or 2) happens already for months; despite the fact that important updates appear regularly in "control panel -> windows update" and these updates can be installed "manually" [i.e. by clicking "install updates"] without problems.

also the following suggests, that there is something corrup: EVERY DAY the following 2 lines are added at the time of shutdown to "WindowsUpdate.log":

    AU Initiating Install-at-shutdown
Shutdwn user declined update at shutdown

but the log is obviously false, because I have never declined an update at shutdown, because I have never been notified...

    what is the problem?

    THANKS!

    Hi Johan,
Your in the same boat as many others, MS has been playing around with those settings for a while,
Still not back to normal thou.
As for the 2 non-installs, the log should also refer to the KB No's, what are they (possibly W10??)

A few of us had that issue. It's not easy to fix and in my case might have just been lucky.

It's time for Microsoft to fix the Windows 7 update slowdowns

EDIT: You might see if this helps to restore install updates on shutdown option.

I did had problem when using the setting "check for updates but let me choose..."
    Sometimes choose the wrong updates.

Now, i prefer to stick to "...Recommended .." setting.
The "Update" on the Shutdown button do appear, as i do select it, even if i am restarting.

Roy, I attach logs written to WindowsUpdate.log during a single day. I cannot see any problem reported. but I hope that someone can... right now, 12 important+34 optional updates are available in "control panel -> windows update". none of them seems to be W10 - they are too small; the largest about 27MB.

Callender, it's not clear to me what exactly you did... it took 3 days [???], therefore, I don't fancy trying it, moreover, when the result is unpredictable...

    any other ideas?

I think it would be too tricky to post instructions on a full removal and reinstall of windows updates and a lot can go wrong. Plus a few things have changed since I did that with extra updates required to be installed to get things working.

The main suggestion would be to make a system image backup now before trying to fix it.

EDIT: Re notification of new updates missing. Some of us who had that problem resorted to pinning a Windows Update shorcut to the Start Menu:

after hours of googling, the problem has been solved by manual installation of KB3172605 [=July 2016 update rollup] that contains KB3161647 which brings the "Windows Update Client for Windows 7" to the latest version.
