Windows Update in Windows 7 completely nonfunctional after moving comp

So, about 8 months ago, I got around to building a new computer to replace the cheap prebuilt that I had been using until the power supply burst into flames (how's that for a cautionary tale about buying cheap prebuilts?). I didn't particularly like the idea of having to freshly install Windows 7 and reinstall all my software, so I was pretty happy when I found out that Microsoft has a program, Sysprep, to let you move an existing Windows installation to a new computer, no harm, no foul. And so that happened. And it worked, with very little fuss involved. And I rejoiced, because I hate sitting though OS installs.

Except for one minor little detail. Since the move, I haven't been able to use Windows update at all. Try to open Windows update from Control Panel? No response, absolutely none. Try to manually download an update and install it? "This update is not applicable to your computer"

At the time, not that big of a concern. I figured I'd get around to looking at it and it would be a quick and easy fix. Getting around to it ended up taking those 8 months before I finally admitted I couldn't keep going like this. And so far, fixing this has been neither quick nor easy for me.

So there's a System Update Readiness Tool meant to fix problems like this? Excellent, I'll be done in no time!

"This update is not applicable to your computer"

Repeat this same error message for anything and everything that comes in a .msu package.

Maybe something's corrupted! System file check, away!

*Stops at 20% and spits out a log I can't make heads or tails of*

Getting nowhere fast.

Windows 7 disc, repair install!

*Hard drives not detected*

That was entirely unhelpful and not worth pulling the DVD-ROM out of my other computer for. But wait, Microsoft has a diagnostic tool for Windows Update! And it spits out an actual error I can follow up on!

"Windows Update Error 0x80070490"

So naturally, I Google the error, pop over to Microsoft's support page on the subject, and am given great knowledge I never could have obtained elsewhere! Run SFC and SURT.

I absolutely refuse to go around in circles. Which leaves me sitting here, alone and defeated.

Been there and done that already, it's mentioned in my opening post.

Hi Truth,

First lets reset ActiveX.
Controlpanel >>Internet options >> advanced >> restore defaults

now try another version of Surt, copy/paste results
http://www.sysnative.com/niemiro/apps/SFCFix.exe

As you used sysprep can you also post the results of this tool

Hi Truth,
Thats lookin better.
Right lets sort the last 2 errors, (bottom 4 all relate to the windows update agent)
please D/L and run the current version of the WUA
KB 3138612

Now for the other error, we need to rebuild the service protection service, please follow the directions in the screenshot
Then try updating....and the outcome is?

Roy

"This update is not applicable to your computer"

I'd swear I was an idiot who didn't know what version of Windows I was running if I hadn't double checked four times.

I followed the first half of the instructions, still no response from Windows Update. I followed the second set, still nothing.

Hi Truth,
Got the same version as you on my comp, those 4 corrupted files DO NOT appear in my SXS folder, strange??
I also see you've used slmgr re-arm, so we had better sort it quickly.

Do you still have your system Builder discs, looks like the fix is going to have to be a system repair
Repair Install

The longer route can i see a copy of your windowsUpdate log (C >> Windows >> windowsUpdate)
Just the last day's entries.

I have the Win7 install disc, I tried doing a repair install from it before coming here, but the installer can't detect my installation.

I've attached a .txt with everything from today, I can pull from earlier if you think more info would be helpful.
