Anyone Having Problems Since the Last Set of Windows Updates?

I put in the last set of main updates for September last week, and now I notice something odd when my computer wakes from sleep. The computer freezes and stutters for about a minute after it wakes up, then it is fine and works normally. My mouse freezes and looking at Resource Monitor it shows the CPU spiking to 100% at times in between lockups. Memory use is normal. Note that it doesn't happen every time I wake the computer. Only 2 or 3 times out of 10.

What I've done so far:

- Scanned with MSE, MalwareBytes, and SuperAntiSpyware - no problems found.
- Tested memory with Memtest86+ (eight passes) - no problems found
- Monitored CPU, Disk, and Network tabs in Resource Monitor for unusual activity when the PC is working properly - no issues found.
- Ran CHKDSK - no issues found
- Ran SFC /SCANNOW - no issues found
- Checked temperatures and voltages with HWMonitor and physically with a multimeter - no issues there either.
- Checked the Event Viewer - nothing unusual there.

I'm at a complete loss to explain this. There are only two possibilities. I was click-jacked last week and taken to a suspicious website. Perhaps I contracted an exotic virus that my virus scanners haven't detected yet? Or, the other possibility is that a Windows update is causing this. Since I have real time virus protection in place and use something that prevents unwanted items from loading on web pages, I tend to suspect the updates.

Any thoughts?

Hi, @Mellon Head:

>>Caveat: I do not use SLEEP on either Win7 box and I updated with September patches only yesterday (desktop) and a little while ago (laptop).

But I have not seen that sort of behavior.
I will monitor both systems and report back, if I see anything peculiar or similar to the issue you report.

Cheers,

MM

Glad I'm not the only one! Same thing has been happening to me lately Mellon Head. I'm not sure which update but something isn't quite right.

I've had the same as you, occasional freezing after coming out of sleep. Not always straight away, sometimes a few minutes later. Explorer won't do anything and I can't click anything or open any menus for about 60 seconds.

Thought it might have been a program causing some issue, but I'm beginning to think it might be one of the latest updates that's causing it. Doesn't happen often but very annoying when it does.

I've had the latest updates installed for almost a week now and i haven't seen this issue.
I use Sleep and Hibernate (Hybrid Sleep).

What i do when i work on a system with a problem like this,
Have a program always running where the max CPU is displayed and i can see enough of that window to see what is using the CPU, even if i can't click on anything on startup/wakeup.

Personally I always have Sysinternals Process Explorer running so i can keep an eye on things.
Resource Monitor might be better for this problem, so you can see max CPU for Processes and Services.

Yes! That's the exact problem that I'm having, and it's not all the time. I thought my machine had just gone crazy. Good to know that I'm not the only one, though it's unfortunate that you're having this problem too.

Yup. Done that. I'll have to check again to see what is thrashing the CPU though.
