Follow these instructions exactly.
First, set Windows Updates to never check for Updates.
Next restart your computer, then install KB3020369, if not installed.
Then install KB3172605.

Windows updates should return to normal. You can then reset your updates to automatically check for updates if desired

Tried to install the fixes, but all I got is an error message, 0x80070422. So how do I resolve this problem?

Update: Turned automatic updates back on and that got rid of the error code. Ran the Microsoft fixes and the computer is saying that I already have the fixes installed. Tried downloading the latest updates, but it's just sitting there spinning, won't download.

Thanks for the info, but that didn't work either. Tried the windows update troubleshooter and the standalone updater and they both just sit there spinning, looking for updates and/ or files, which neither can find. Anyone got any more ideas?
Thanks

Hi, @mad maximus:

At the risk of hijacking the OP's thread and in addition to the excellent advice offered by @pbcopter,...

In addition to changing the WU settings to "never check for updates", you might need to also do the following:
  • If you have not already done so, download & save (but do not yet run) KB3020369 and KB3172605 (see links in the previous reply in this thread)
  • From the Windows start orb, type "services.msc" (no quotes).
  • Scroll down to Windows Update service
  • RIGHT mouse-click on it
  • Change it to "disabled" and the "stop" the service, click "OK"
  • Reboot the computer
  • Run KB3020369, reboot
  • Run KB3172605, reboot
  • Go back into Windows update and reset it back to enable checking for updates (most of us use "let me choose...")
  • Go back into services.msc and change Windows Update back to "automatic-delayed start"
(I am on my Win10 box at the moment, but I think those are the correct steps in the correct order.)

You ought to now be able to run a manual Windows "check for updates" and things ought to work OK.
This has worked for me (two different systems) and many, many other folks.

If it does not, then it's probably a different problem.

Please let us know how it goes,

MM
