Do I need to install recommended updates?

I would like your advice on installing recommended updates. I just did a clean install for a friend and installed the convenience rollup, then finished installing the rest of the updates. I left the box for recommended updates unchecked. Do you think I should install these too?

Personally I leave them alone because otherwise it means hours of searching what the updates are for (I have better things to do with my time) and one has to wonder why are they "recommended"

Should I install recommended updates that I don't need?
Is it necessary to install recommended updates that don't apply to me? They must be called "recommended updates" for a reason. But barely any of the issues they fix occur for me. Also, there is one recommended update that I'm not sure if I need of not. This update appears to be for USB Type-C...

Updates - important/recommended etc.
When I see the Windows Updates listing there's a tab for "important" and a tab for "recommended." Today I loaded all updates that were important. But when I looked in my update history, a few were described as recommended. Also, today some places listed one update as "critical" - (the one...

Never check for updates (Not recommended) is MISSING
When I go to Control panel > Windows update > Change settings Under 'Important Updates' drop down 'Never check for updates (Not recommended)' item is MISSING. I completely know how important it is to keep the Windows update turned ON, yet I prefer to TURN OFF Windows update for a specific work...

Optional or Recommended (Critical) Updates
I've noticed that when I put an "Optional" update (Win 7) into the Hidden "folder," it is then marked "Recommended." If I "restore" a Hidden Recommended update, it then changes to "Optional" when it is restored. Does anyone know what I am trying to explain? A file says Optional when I look in the...

Updates failed. What debug steps recommended?
interesting... I've never seen this. My Ultimate x64 rig was fairly well up to date but I wanted to grab what I could for Office 2003 since I had had some trouble with Excel. So I plucked off some of the recent win7 security updates and the office 2003 updates and let it start downloading....

2 recommended updates failed.
Windows 7 hp 32bit. During update 2 of 9 updates failed. Reason: Powersupply got cut off. I think the 2 updates where downloaded, but are not installed. Updates in question: kb982018 and kb2529073. Q: Is there a way to clear the updates and do the updating again? Thanks.
