Does MRT use Windows Defender definitions?

My Windows 7 updates recently started including Windows Defender definitions, even though I do not have Windows Defender enabled. I do use Malicious Software Removal Tool (MRT) occasionally. Does MRT use the Windows Defender definitions, or can I skip the Windows Defender updates without any problem?

HI XPDA,
MRST is issued/offered EVERY month, so depending on what your WU updates settings are, it will either run automatically or show up in your optional updates section.
(it is independent of MSE/WD)

Not as far as I know.

Why do you have Windows Defender disabled?. Do you have a an anti virus program installed & if so which one is it. If you use Microsoft Security Essentials (Microsoft's anti virus program) it will disable Windows Defender & you don't get Defender updates either.

Link for manual Defender definitions file download
Some reason my update for Defender has been failing since the end of April. I went to the Microsoft site and the link they give to download the file for manual installation gives me a dead link. Where are their definition files located?
