windows update unsafe?

my question lays at the heart of my concern over a specific windows update called - windows malicious software removal tool - nov 2009 (KB890830) - on a previous laptop that specific windows tool kept trying to download on automatic update EVERYTIME I shut down the computer for 2 weeks or more. I'm interested in whether or not that would have something to do with causing a serious problem to a computer or was that simply a problem with the update process.

it was very aggresive and my being just a basic computer user makes me think it might not have been genuine microsoft material, so when I see an update ready to install on my new laptop that looks just like the mentioned one above but for dec ...well I sort have to wonder considering how badly my other laptop just,...imploded permanently.

there obviously were other issues going on with my other laptop but i'm still left wondering if someone has found a way to highjack microsoft updates...

An updated version is downloaded and installed every time, and it always has the same KB number, KB890830. If you check, you will also see that definitions updates for Windows Defender also have the same (different) KB number, KB915597.These are usually made available on Patch Tuesdays, and at other times as well if the need arises. This is intentional, so if you manually download them you always receive the latest versions.
