Problem Re-Downloading Driver from windows update

I have a laptop with a radeon Mobile 9600 recently updated to windows 7 form XP.
Originally windows update found a driver for my card and installed it with played video good and allowed for aero. Following the advice of another I updated my driver with the one from my laptop manufacturer, however it was a windows vista driver. In order to install that driver I had to Uninstall the one form windows update preventing me form using rollback. After installation I lost aero features and my video playback suffered. I want to go back to the driver form windows update until a Windows 7 driver is made.

That is where the problem starts... Windows won't Find the driver when I search using update driver. Windows update shows that the driver is installed so it won't re-download. Also it isn't in the Installed Updates so i can't seem to make windows uninstall it.

Only info i have to go on is i found this in the log in the
C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution folder

Installation successful and restart required for the following update: ATI Technologies Inc. - Display - ATI MOBILITY RADEON 9600/9700 Series

i tried searching my computer and the registry for any of the info learned form this but found only a dead end.

Does anyone have a thought that might allow me to remove the download form my update history so i can re-install the driver without re-installing Windows 7?

First go into the Control Panel>Programs & Features and click the "show all updates" option as well as looking for the ATI Catalyst item there. You can also go into the device manager look under display adapters and right click to uninstall drivers there too.

Once removed rather then going through the update you simply go direct to the AMD/ATI download site to select between the full with catalyst or drivers only for the 32bit or 64bit 7 there. Drivers & Support | GAME.AMD.COM

thanks for the quick response, however i have solved this problem

THE SOLUTION:
1) start "services.msc"
2) Stop the "Windows Update" service
3) Delete, Rename, Move the "DataStore.edb" form the "%windir%\SoftwareDistribution" folder
4) Start the "Windows Update" Service
5) run "Windows Update"

This will cause windows to RESCAN the whole system to determine the updates needed for your computer.
WARNING: This will REMOVE ALL UPDATE HISTORY, but not your "Installed updates". You can still uninstall the security updates from there.

Hope this will help other people with issues on trying to Re-Download any file form Windows Update. =)

For reference when going to install the latest release over an existing older version it simply goes right on without the need for removal first in most cases unless like you saw there get the wrong ones through the updates. Generally I uncheck the optional hardware updates to go for the latest right at ATI or wherever since the latest at the MS site will often be the same and hamper an existing install already on.

The same applies to addon devices like tv tuner cards where the latest drive constantly seen in the optional there is already on. Allowing it to install again means wiping the drivers and application off to start over! At least you have that solved now but may want to ignore hardware updates due to what you just saw happen when going for updates in gereral.

If you use your powers of Reading Comprehension, you would see that i was trying to install and OLDER driver than the one from Microsoft Update, But thanks for the blurb about how to install a driver like I was a complete idiot =)
