Ethernet disabled after updates installed

I have recently installed Windows 7 on 2 computers. The first installed without a hitch and everything is working fine. I proceeded next to install it on my computer. The parts are slightly older but should not make a difference.

Anyways, 3 times now, after fresh installs, the updates don't always take and then when the computer restarts, The Ethernet device is not detected. I am going to attempt to find Windows 7 Drivers for my Ethernet device on the motherboard from the ASUS website and install it manually, but any other advice would be greatly appreciated, (such as MS' updates being corrupted and disabling the device? Or the OS simply installs the wrong drivers for the Ethernet device?

Look at the updates and make sure it doesnt download or install one for the nic

Thanks, I did look at the updates but unfortunately info is limited in what the updates show. I can only get about 7 at a time that are essential updates. I am starting to think that my motherboard might be too old to run 7 as I cannot find any updated drivers online for not just the Ethernet device but the entire Motherboard. I am still searching.

Can you please tell me what the 'nic' is?

The "nic" is the network interface card
It will say something about a network adapter in the name.


Try doing one update at a time, then you can find the trouble point.

My RM was running win 7 on a OLD dell p4 So unless if its worse than that it should run 7 fine....
(It actually ran 7 better than Xp )

Thanks, I'll likely have to do a fresh install again to wipe out a lot of crap. So far, Windows won't strat properly but it is doing a startup repair op. I am hopeful this will fix things as the first time I tried to install, I got much further than the last 2 times.

Thanks again, I'm done for tonight. Wife has to get up at 6 but I'll do a fresh install and updates one at a time. So far there are only 5 and none say nic. They are Security Updates and 1 Hotfix. Not sure what that is for. I may continue this thread tomorrow if I get stuck again.

If again you will have trouble then I suggest flash new BIOS and update drivers for chipset too.

Sure will do. Starting the process over again, but flashing BIOS might be the way to go. I'll give it a try

For those of you using the ASUS M2N-VM DVI Motherboard, if you are experiencing difficulty with connecting to the Internet, this solution worked for me:

Install Windows 7 Normally. Make sure your Ethernet cable is unplugged during this process

1. Insert the Motherboard Disk but do NOT start Run.exe
2. Open File Folder to see options
3. Choose the Vista x64 driver folder
4. click on the setup file for nvidia drivers (this will install the LAN driver for your Ethernet Port)
5. Install an Anti-Virus program before connecting to the Internet
6. For Firefox users (Disable Internet Explorer 8 and do not install any updates for this program) then install Latest version of Firefox.
7. Connect the Ethernet Cable (set up network) and update Anti-Virus immediately

That should do it. Keep in mind I am still in the testing phase but it has been working for me so far. I suspect that Windows 7 was not installing the proper drivers for the Ethernet device and that is why a proper connection could not be maintained after a few minutes. With the older driver meant to work with the Motherboard but still in an x64 environment, I suspect this should resolve the problem.

For those of you using Asus Motherboard M2N-VM DVI, if you are experiencing problems with your Ethernet Connection, I did the following to resolve it:

1. Install Windows 7 normally, but disconnect the Ethernet cable from the port before installation
2. After Windows Starts, insert the motherboard disc
3. Do NOT start the Run.exe, instead, open the folder for viewing
4. Select the Vista x64 folder and then run the setup file for Nvidia drivers
5. This will install the Ethernet Controller driver for the motherboard
6. Install Anti-Virus software
7. Connect the cable to the port, set up network and update Anti-Virus right away

This has resolved my issue so far. I am being very careful with Windows Updates as they tended to be the cause of my computer not maintaining an Internet connection.
