Windows 7: Activation server issues

Hi,
I recently installed windows 7 on my new computer, i previously had windows on it but i did a clean install as i wanted to start from a clean slate.
When i tried to enter my product key in the setup it wouldn't accept it, now it is installed though i enter it in the activation part of the control panel and it returns the error:
"The activation server determined that the specific product key could not be used"

I am migrating my copy of windows 7 from my laptop to this computer so it was fine when i activated my laptop a few months ago but now when i try and activate my new computer it comes up with the error.

I was going to wipe my laptop in a couple of days when i got time and i was wondering if that would be what i need to make it so the second computer will activate or if it's something else.

Oh, one other thing, i got my licence key through the uni student offer meaning that i'm not sure if its an upgrade key or not..

Your licence is for one PC only, at any one time, you may need to phone MS for reactivation.

Activate Windows 7 by Phone

Remove the OS from the first computer. When you install on the second, do not give the key number when asked. In fact uncheck the box, allowing an automatic activation when online.

Use the system and enjoy it up to 30 days. You will be given a phone number to call to activate, use it. Explain the situation and you will be good to go.
