One Fix for Update Install Failure

Wanted to post a fix done recently to Update.

Have a new W/7 HP with all the bells and whistles that fetched updates, got most of the way through the update process and "failed to install" at the last moment. Wouldn't give the "copyright screen" approval box.

I tried registry cleaners and most of the fixes proposed on this chat without any change in results.

Using the downloaded "Windows Install Cleaner" I removed Office 2003 and removed it's registry entries, removed all files from the temp directory, emptied the Recycle bin. Then rebooted.

Windows update then worked perfectly. I upgraded at that opportunity to Office 2007, and Update continues to work OK.

I got this procedure from Microsoft tech support, no brilliance on my part, just wanted to pass it along.
