installed it, love it, but activation??? hi there. been running 7 sucessfully (thanks to this forum) for about a month now. i now have the 'not a genuine copy' message on my desktop.
so when the reminder bubble appeared this evening i thought i'd register it. typed the key found on the inlay in and clicked next. got an error message saying this version cannot be registered for clean installs. only upgrades.
i did a clean install so does that mean i have to stick to an unregistered version?
thanks for any help in advance | My System Specs |

Hello,
Here's what you can do: Do a Repair Install. Seeing as it is already installed, you will effectively be doing an Upgrade, and can use your key to activate.

Hope this helps,

~JK Yes that is one very good solution, but there is also another, which I offer only so you may choose what is best for you.
You can use the chart that I will provide, to call and activate. It will be done with a touch tone phone. If there is a problem you will be elevated to a very cooperative rep, who will activate for you. http://www.microsoft.com/licensing/e...n-centers.aspx | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Dell XPS 420 OS Windows 7 Home Premium SP1, clean install, upgrade disc CPU Intel Core2 processsor Q8200(2.33Ghz 1333FSB) Quad Core Tech Motherboard Dell Memory 6 gb Graphics Card ATI Radeon 256MB HD3650 Sound Card Intergrated 7.1 Channel Audio Monitor(s) Displays Dell SP2009W 20" Keyboard Dell USB Keyboard Mouse Dell Premium Optical USB Cooling Fan Hard Drives 640 GB Serial ATA Hard drive Internet Speed DSL 2.85 |

Go ahead and follow Richard's suggestion, but if you choose to take mine instead, note that the Repair Install will not touch your files and programs. It only affects the OS, nothing else. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Custom OS Windows 7 Professional x64 CPU Intel i7 2600K OC'd @ 4620 MHz Motherboard Asus P8Z68-V Pro Memory 16GB GSkill Sniper 2133 Mhz (4x4GB) Graphics Card EVGA GeForce GTX 480 SuperClocked+ Sound Card Realtek High Definition Audio Monitor(s) Displays 2x Acer S273HLbmii 27" Screen Resolution 2 x 1920x1080 Keyboard Logitech MK320 (wireless) Mouse Logitech MK320 (wireless) PSU Corsair HW Series 750w (modular) Case Cooler Master HAF 932 Advanced Blue Edition Cooling CM Hyper 212+ CPU cooler, 3x 230mm + 1x 140mm case fans Hard Drives 64GB Crucial M4 SSD

You have been given two very good choices. Take the one that makes you the most comfortable, they both should work.
