    1 update still won't install

KB978207, which is "Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 8 for Windows 7." The update is a whopping 7.1MB compared to the other updates, which were between 50-1000KB (none of them reached 1000).

According to my observances, I notice that when I restart, Windows Update only seems to operate for a short amount of time, whether it finishes or not. So apparently this update is too big to complete in that amount of time.

So how do I get around this?

    DETAILS:

Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 8 for Windows 7 (KB978207)

    Installation date: ‎2/‎11/‎2010 12:32 AM

    Installation status: Failed

    Error details: Code 800719E4

    Update type: Important

Security issues have been identified that could allow an attacker to compromise a system that is running Microsoft Internet Explorer and gain control over it. You can help protect your system by installing this update from Microsoft. After you install this item, you may have to restart your computer.

I attached a copy of CBS.log for you to look at. (The .log file wouldn't upload itself, so I needed to zip it)

It is very hard issue and even MS don't know how to fix.I think this one:Updates KB977074 KB8976972 will not configure in Window7 Professional.

    also addressed to you.

Only well know this error from your log

    "CBS_E_DPX_JOB_STATE_SAVED"
cause Google Desktop but not only this soft (details in the link).I don't see Google Desktop in your installed programs,I see only Google Toolbar ->uninstall this soft and we'll see.You may also have any problems with any other application or driver what suggest another error:

The transaction will be cancelled. [HRESULT = 0x80004005 - E_FAIL]
MS article Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 service pack installation fails with error 0x80004005
You can try update all drivers,to do this use this program Free Driver Update Software - Device Doctor
    It's freeware

    EDIT
You can also installed hotfixes from Microsoft Download Center (not from Windows Update)

If really nothing help I suggest contact with MS Support, from this link they also are working on the same issue.

nope. nothing worked. and contacting MS support, that won't work either, they don't know squat. I'm the phone for at least an hour, getting nowhere, those idiots are telling me how to do something that anyone with a computer should know how to do, they aren't solving the problem. And they're all foreign.

See this article,You may encounter temporary connection-related errors when you use Windows Update or Microsoft Update to install updates
some errors from your CBS.log relate to this article, yes I know some steps you've tried already but not all from this article try below:

Method D: Disable software accelerator programs

Disable any software accelerator programs that may be running. Some examples of these programs are file download accelerators and Internet speed accelerators.

Note If your third-party firewall is still disabled from Method B, do not open e-mail messages, surf the Web, or use instant messenger at this point.Step 1: Disable software accelerator programs

To do this, select from the following options:
    [*]
Probably you've tried already but you know better what you did

    another things:

Method E: Add the Windows Update Web site and the Microsoft Update Web site to the Trusted Sites list

Note If your third-party firewall is still disabled from Method B, do not open e-mail messages, surf the Web, or use instant messenger at this point.

To add the Windows Update Web site and the Microsoft Update Web site to the Trusted Sites list, follow these steps:
    1. Start Windows Internet Explorer.
    2. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.

Note If you are using Internet Explorer 7, and the menu is not available, press the ALT key on your keyboard to access the Internet Explorer Menu.
    3. Click the Security tab, and then click Trusted Sites.
    4. Click Sites, and then click to clear the Require server verification (https:) for all sites in this zone check box.
    5. In the Add this Web site to the zone box, type the following addresses, and then click Add after you type each address:

    6. Click OK two times.
    7. Try to install the updates again.

If this method resolved your issue and you were able to install updates successfully, you should re-enable your third-party firewall if it is still disabled. To do this, see step 2 in Method B.

If this method did not resolve your issue, continue with Method F.
    +
Advanced Method A: Remove entries for Windows Update and Microsoft Update from the hosts file

Some programs may modify the hosts file to control DNS name resolution. Sometimes, an entry for the Windows Update Web site or for the Microsoft Update Web site may exist in the hosts file.

To remove entries from the hosts file, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start, and then click Run.
    2. Copy and then paste (or type) the following command in the Run box, and then press ENTER:notepad %windir%\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
Note If you are prompted to select a program to open the hosts file, click Notepad, click to select the Always use the selected program option, and then click OK.
    3. In Notepad, remove or remark any lines in the hosts file that contain entries for Windows Update so that they are not read when the file is accessed. To do this, put the number sign (#) in front of any line that contains "microsoft" and "update." For example, add the number sign (#) to the beginning of the following entries:

    4. On the File menu, click Save.
    5. Exit Notepad.
    6. Restart the computer.

Note If you do not want to restart the computer, you can also flush the DNS resolver cache. To do this, follow these steps:
      1. Click Start, and then click Run.
      2. Type cmd in the Run box, and then press ENTER.
      3. At the command prompt, type ipconfig /flushdns, and then press ENTER.

Advanced Method B: Remove the proxy server entry from the WinHTTP proxy configuration

    Windows 7

To remove the proxy server entry from the WinHTTP proxy configuration for Windows 7, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start, and then type cmd in the Start programs and files box.
    2. Right-click cmd.exe in the Programs list, and then click Run as administrator.

Note If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or click Continue.
    3. Type the following command and then press Enter:netsh winhttp show proxy
Note The proxy setting is listed next to Proxy Server. If there is no proxy server, Direct Access <no proxy server> is shown in the Command Prompt window.
    4. To remove the listed proxy setting, type the following command and then press Enter:

      netsh winhttp reset proxy
    5. Go back to the Windows Update or Microsoft Update site and try to download and install the updates again.

brady, wouldn't that be a bad idea? I would need to install all of those updates over again! Do you know how long that would take?

it's not that big of a deal actually. Most of these updates that people install automatically are usually installed on test machines on test networks before installed on live boxes. The past 2 months of updates have caused severe issues on live environments, most updates haven't been released off the test networks due to their instability at the moment. The reason I say to uninstall feb and 1/2 of Jan is due to initial updates and revised updates. If you only uninstall the feb, your jan pre req updates will still be intact, thus prompting for these same failing feb updates. If you poke around on this forum you will notice something very similar in most posts... "After installing updates * doesn't work" or "BSOD After updating"... you get the idea.

i checked, and this is the first update the computer has tried to install for IE8. So no uninstalling is necessary.

flavius, I tried everything in your last post, disabled dl accelerator, etc. etc. nothing works.
