Windows Updates already installed?

I am going to start a separate thread on this issue, but you can keep replying to this thread if you want.

nope. nothing worked. and contacting MS support, that won't work either, they don't know squat. I'm the phone for at least an hour, getting nowhere, those idiots are telling me how to do something that anyone with a computer should know how to do, they aren't solving the problem. And they're all foreign.

Method E: Add the Windows Update Web site and the Microsoft Update Web site to the Trusted Sites list

To add the Windows Update Web site and the Microsoft Update Web site to the Trusted Sites list, follow these steps:

1. Start Windows Internet Explorer.
2. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
   
   Note If you are using Internet Explorer 7, and the menu is not available, press the ALT key on your keyboard to access the Internet Explorer Menu.
3. Click the Security tab, and then click Trusted Sites.
4. Click Sites, and then click to clear the Require server verification (https:) for all sites in this zone check box.

If this method resolved your issue and you were able to install updates successfully, you should re-enable your third-party firewall if it is still disabled. To do this, see step 2 in Method B.

Advanced Method A: Remove entries for Windows Update and Microsoft Update from the hosts file

Some programs may modify the hosts file to control DNS name resolution. Sometimes, an entry for the Windows Update Web site or for the Microsoft Update Web site may exist in the hosts file.

To remove entries from the hosts file, follow these steps:

1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. Copy and then paste (or type) the following command in the Run box, and then press ENTER:notepad %windir%\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
   Note If you are prompted to select a program to open the hosts file, click Notepad, click to select the Always use the selected program option, and then click OK.
3. In Notepad, remove or remark any lines in the hosts file that contain entries for Windows Update so that they are not read when the file is accessed. To do this, put the number sign (#) in front of any line that contains "microsoft" and "update." For example, add the number sign (#) to the beginning of the following entries:
   
   • # 64.4.21.125 http://update.microsoft.com
   • # 64.4.21.125 Microsoft Windows Update
   • # http://update.microsoft.com
   
   
4. On the File menu, click Save.
5. Exit Notepad.
6. Restart the computer.
   
   Note If you do not want to restart the computer, you can also flush the DNS resolver cache. To do this, follow these steps:
   
   1. Click Start, and then click Run.
   2. Type cmd in the Run box, and then press ENTER.
   3. At the command prompt, type ipconfig /flushdns, and then press ENTER.

Advanced Method B: Remove the proxy server entry from the WinHTTP proxy configuration

Windows 7

To remove the proxy server entry from the WinHTTP proxy configuration for Windows 7, follow these steps:

1. Click Start, and then type cmd in the Start programs and files box.
2. Right-click cmd.exe in the Programs list, and then click Run as administrator.
   
   Note If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or click Continue.
3. Type the following command and then press Enter:netsh winhttp show proxy
   Note The proxy setting is listed next to Proxy Server. If there is no proxy server, Direct Access <no proxy server> is shown in the Command Prompt window.
4. To remove the listed proxy setting, type the following command and then press Enter:
   
   netsh winhttp reset proxy
5. Go back to the Windows Update or Microsoft Update site and try to download and install the updates again.

uninstall recently "installed" updates through add/remove programs choose all of feb updates if not half of jan as well.

brady, wouldn't that be a bad idea? I would need to install all of those updates over again! Do you know how long that would take?

it's not that big of a deal actually. Most of these updates that people install automatically are usually installed on test machines on test networks before installed on live boxes. The past 2 months of updates have caused severe issues on live environments, most updates haven't been released off the test networks due to their instability at the moment. The reason I say to uninstall feb and 1/2 of Jan is due to initial updates and revised updates. If you only uninstall the feb, your jan pre req updates will still be intact, thus prompting for these same failing feb updates. If you poke around on this forum you will notice something very similar in most posts... "After installing updates * doesn't work" or "BSOD After updating"... you get the idea.

i checked, and this is the first update the computer has tried to install for IE8. So no uninstalling is necessary.

flavius, I tried everything in your last post, disabled dl accelerator, etc. etc. nothing works.
