... OOK be gentle with me! I'm a novice, have Windows 7 starter on my notebook and all working well and has updated OK. This morning, it wants to install the latest updates and has spent the last 30 minutes at 'please be patient, do not unplug ... installing 3 of 5 ' .. and going no further! Help what do I do?
In simple English please, I have never gone into the msconfig. thing and am a bit scared to do so. Do I switch off? Do I continue to wait?
Its a Dell Mini-Inspiron, just a few weeks old. Everything has been working fine up to now ..
Heeeeeellllppp !! Eeek!

OK but do I just switch off, and then won't it come back with the same Installing Windows update immediately so I can't get to the Control Panel screen?

Like Flavius said.... let things go for a while longer. There is a chance that powering down at this stage could send you in an install loop.

Do you have a Windows 7 disc if worse comes to worse?

Still the same message when you restarted computer? If yes try to run system in safe mode and restore system :METHOD I from this link:http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/700-system-restore.html

If you have any problems in safe mode too,you have to burn special recovery disk for Win7 Download Windows 7 System Recovery Discs — The NeoSmart Files on other computer, burn, boot it and restore system METHOD II http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/700-system-restore.html

If he has a Windows 7 install disc... Couldn't he use that for a system restore if needed?

hmm this is going to be fun! I have found a Dell Windows 7 reinstallation disk that came with the notebook ... however, the notebook doesn't have a DVD drive! Apologies if I am asking dumb questions but if push came to shove, how would I get around that?
Oh by the way, fluffpot is female. I imagine you guessed that from the daft questions I'm asking.
Truly grateful if you chaps could help me get this sorted.

OK just came back to the PC, didn't read electrotune's advice but decided to switch off and start again. However, cannot start in safe mode - pressed F8 several times, nothing happens, just switches back to the 'Please do not switch off .... Windows is installing' screen. Why didn't Safe Mode work? I've tried it several times, and zilch.
Thanks for the time you're taking on this, much appreciated.

It's quit possible you'll need to perform a system restore. We'll get to that point when you get a flash drive with your 7 disc loaded onto it.

Ok need to go out and buy a new USB of at last 4GB to do this.
Before I do so, is there any other way of getting into safe mode, or at least getting past this blasted 'Updating' screen please?

Are you hitting F8 during the BIOS screen? If this is not working I'm really out of suggestions until you get a flash drive ready to go.

OK, it's sorted !

Well I started it up again and pressed F8 repeatedly and eventually came up in Safe Mode. Opened up OK and went to System Restore and went back a week. Phew, all worked fine, shut down, restarted, all OK.
Phew, phew and double-phew!
Obviously something in the latest Windows Update doesn't agree with my computer ... is there any way I can turn off automatic updates? I remember they gave me grief on another PC some years ago and as I have good virus protection I don't think I need them (but would appreciate advice, suggestions, etc., from you experts out there).
So thanks chaps, you're a great bunch!:D
