What windows 7 version is my activation key for

I recieved a windows 7 enterprise 32 bit from college.
Today I recieved the key to activate it, but the key in question is somehow invalid.
I'm wondering if either they gave me the wrong key, or if I did a little to much messing around and need to reinstall my OS?
    Does a 64bit enterprise key work on a 32bit?
Is there a way to check what version the key is for?

    Welcome

A key is good for one edition any platform. If you have Enterprise and a key, you can install Enterprise 32 or 64 bit. In fact you can change as many times as you like. Go from 32 to 64 or 64 to 32. BUT only one OS at a time. You cannot run on two computers at once. Hope that this answers your question.

    Not Really

Thanks for the welcome. That really only answers one of my questions.
Now i know that I didn't get the key for 64bit Enterprise.
What I need to know now is what edition does this key activate?
This should be a MAK key. Since it's from a college it should activate several hundred.
I need to know if I need to get a new key, activate via KMS server, or reinstall my OS.

From your responses I take it there's no way to verify the key.
It took me 2 weeks to get the first key from the guy. I was hoping there was a faster solution. Guess I'll reinstall and see if it works then. If it doesn't work and I can't get a key from the guy (quickly), then I guess I'll just take it up there to get it activated via their KMS server.
