If you have a legitimate version of W7, then you should have nothing to worry about. At the moment, this update is optional but in due course it will be automatically installed.

How will it be come auto if you don't do updates. I feel it is my right to install what updates I want and not Microsoft. I still have a computer with Vista on it without sp1 or sp2 on it and not most of the updates and not having any problems. Most of the updates are a joke. You know everybody if Billy Boy didn't charge high prices for his software more people would by it and not try to steal it.

So far I did the update last week on my main computer with no problems. I have another computer doing updates but not that one. To see how long it will take Microsoft to tell me I have to this update so I can do future updates. That is why more an more people hate Microsoft and are going to linux. If it wasn't for the games I would have been running linux ten years ago. Plus it is free I can run linux on as many computers with the same copy, you can't do that with Billy Boy's.

Well, they could essentially prevent you from installing future updates, service packs, etc without a certain baseline previously installed the box which might include this update.

While I can appreciate what you are saying about having control...a careful reading of the license agreement will show that you don't actually own your OS..but rather are allowed to use it at the discretion of Microsoft.

I still have a computer with Vista on it without sp1 or sp2 on it and not most of the updates and not having any problems.
A joke in what way..most are security based and fixed exploitable holes. With regards to Vista, SP1 fixed many of the performance problems that I experienced with that OS. Prior to that service pack, from a network perspective at work, Vista was just about unusable.

Most of the updates are a joke. You know everybody if Billy Boy didn't charge high prices for his software more people would by it and not try to steal it.
I disagree....people pirate $50 games. People generally don't want to pay for anything if they can avoid it. Besides...there is NO REQUIREMENT to run Windows Vista or Windows 7. Lots of people are still happily cruising away with Windows XP.

Plus it is free I can run linux on as many computers with the same copy, you can't do that with Billy Boy's.
Right, so dedicate time to working with Linux regularly and make contributions to it rather than pirating and running Windows. That would be my advice.

Good chance that if you don't install it now it will be released in SP1. Don't blame Microsoft for attempting to protect their property. If you load illegal software then you should expect something to happen sooner or later. At least this time Microsoft has given you fair warning.

Have a nice computing day. :D

pparks1, you should understand regardless of what the license agreement says most users just like myself feel we own that copy. this belief is not going to go away. i do agree with you about sp1 for vista. i bought vista shortly after it came out. i ended up going back to xp because all of the problems vista had pre sp1. i was able to go back to vista after sp1 made it stable. as for why people pirate no one wants to give any company a 2000% profit but we do, and that is what microsoft makes on windows.

lol Lee, I think he thought it would be ok. He probably thought. we bought two computers, they both have vista one of them came with a free upgrade CD, I'll use that. I am sure if it warned him that it was only to be used with his mom's computer, he would have chose another route.

I'm still waiting for the answer to a question that I posted in another thread. Apparently, WAT creates a new service, and I'm wondering what happens if that service is disabled?

Probably nothing. There is probably another hidden service that calls that program though and re-enables it. there are programs that can prevent programs from running, but I dont know where to start for win7.

I had to do this a few times because the local computer repair shop was reinstalling windows for anything-under-the-sun reasons -.- and not installing a geniune copy of windows....dont ask... I had to stop the service from running or being called so the person wouldn't have to deal with it. I advised though to take it back to the shop and demand it to be fixed correctly or else they wouldn't be able use upgrades and patches when released.

Without the service running, MS updates dont work. also, you cant go online to MS sites and download programs. you cant use Live services (not sure about livemail).

pparks1, you should understand regardless of what the license agreement says most users just like myself feel we own that copy.
I understand and often feel the same way...but at the end of the day...how we feel is irrelevant...it's what we agree to when we click on accept for that EULA that is legally binding. Nobody reads these things, and they are mostly unreadable with all the legalese...but it is what it is.

as for why people pirate no one wants to give any company a 2000% profit but we do, and that is what microsoft makes on windows.
People pirate because they want to get something for free...the actual profit percentage doesn't get taken into account by most people. And if people feel so strongly that companies shouldn't make these levels of profit, I would strongly encourage them to seek alternative products rather than resorting to piracy and give Microsoft the additional installed base %.

I can relate to those who way that Windows is expensive or have multiple computers to install onto....however it's only $109 in the US for the upgrade. People drop this kind of change on a hard drive and claim it's cheap. People spend 3x this much on SSD drives and claim it's the best upgrade they have ever made. People spend 3-5x as much on high end video cards to play video games better. And like I said before, you are not required to upgrade. XP still has support for 4 more years if you want to continue using it and save your dollars. I've got 5 PC's in my home that I use regularly...but only 1 of them runs Windows 7.

The consequence in the short term is that you will not get anymore updates.

I think the the right and common sense thing to do is to get a copy of Windows that will be legally activated.

You know the funny part of all of this is how Billy Boy & Microsoft started out. How I understand it he stole everything thing he started out with. But here is the same guy that did that and is saying to today don't steal from me or I'll get you put in jail.

I agree 100% with what everybody is saying. Staple Head is right about the 2000% profit. Microsoft should have it just like other software companies that if I buy a copy for $200 to $300 I should be able to put on three computers. In my household. It should be a retail copy and set like OEM copy for the three computers and maybe 3 different licenses.
